Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener

Norton, MA - The Lasell University Lasers fell to the Wheaton College Lyons in their season opener on Tuesday night. The loss drops the Lasers to 0-1 to start the season, while Wheaton begins 1-0.

The first quarter was a close affair, as the two teams traded baskets. With three and a half minutes remaining in the quarter, the score was tied at 12, but the Lyons would use a 8-3 lead to close the period, and take a 20-17 lead into the second quarter.

While both teams had their offenses running smoothly in the first quarter, it was the opposite in the second. The two teams combined to make just six shots in the quarter, and the Lyons outscored the Lasers 12-6, giving them a 32-23 lead at the half.

The third quarter proved to be the difference maker in the game. The Lyons utilized a 13-1 run to take as large as a 23 point lead. They ended up outscoring the Lasers 22-12 in the quarter, giving them a 19 point lead headed into the last period.

The fourth quarter saw the two teams go back and forth, but the Lasers were never able to take a dent out of the Lyons lead. Wheaton held the slight advantage in the quarter, 13-11.

The difference in the game proved to be shooting and rebounding. The Lyons shot 25-56 (44.6%) compared to the Lasers (15-53 (28.3%). The Lyons also outrebounded the Lasers 47-26.

Juju Nealy led the way for the Lasers, scoring 14 points. Behind her was Brenna Graber with seven. Jasmine DePina  and Graber each grabbed five rebounds.

Up Next - The Lasers will look to get in the win column on Saturday, November 12th, as they host Maine-Augusta in their home opener. That game is scheduled to start at 12pm.
