Women's Basketball: Lasers come up short, 67-47, at Regis

WESTON, Mass. - Senior forward Meg Carroll and graduate student Peyton Young tallied a combined 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Lasell University women's basketball team during a 67-47 setback to Great Northeast Athletic Conference-rival Regis Tuesday evening.

Carroll shot 7 of 13 from the field, finishing with a team-high 14 points and six rebounds for the Lasers (8-14, 6-10 GNAC). Young played 24 minutes off the bench and compiled eight points and a team-leading 10 boards, while shooting 4 of 9 from the field.

Freshman guard Jasmine DePina compiled nine points and four boards, finishing 4 of 8 from the field. Off the bench, freshman forward Jess Carney posted five points, grabbed three rebounds and shot 2 of 4 from the field.

"It was a better team effort today," said Lasell University Women's Basketball Head Coach Kelley Sundberg. "We need to learn from it and get ready for Thursday."

Pam Gonzalez registered 15 points, nine rebounds and five steals for the Pride (10-8, 9-3 GNAC). Olivia Pacheco came off the bench for the Pride and compiled 15 points, nine boards and three assists. Gonzalez and Pacheco shot a combined 12 of 23 from the field. Courtney Doherty tallied 11 points for the hosts, while Valerie Whalen corralled a game-best 11 rebounds.

A layup by Carroll gave Lasell a 5-4 lead 3:11 into the first quarter. The Pride answered with a 9-0 surge and took a 13-5 advantage on a layup by Gonzalez with 4:11 remaining. Carroll scored six first-quarter points, but Regis led, 21-13, at the end of one.

Carroll opened the second with back-to-back layups, trimming the deficit down to 21-17 with 8:07 on the scoreboard. A jumper by Yvelande Donis with 23 seconds left sent Regis into halftime with a 34-25 cushion.

The Pride built some separation in the second half, earning a 52-33 lead on a layup by Pacheco with 1:54 left in the third. Gonzalez and Pacheco combined for 18 second-half points to secure the triumph for Regis.

The Lasers will compete against GNAC-foe Johnson & Wales Thursday at 6 p.m. in Providence, Rhode Island.
