Women's Basketball: DePina records double-double in 68-61 loss to Saint Joseph (Conn.)

NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman guard Jasmine DePina of the Lasell University women's basketball team compiled her third double-double of the season with 10 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals during a 68-61 setback in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action to Saint Joseph (Conn.) Wednesday in the Athletic Center.

The 10 rebounds by DePina were a team-best and the six assists tied a career-high. Senior forward Meg Carroll finished with a team-best 15 points and seven boards for the Lasers (8-12, 6-8 GNAC), while freshman guard Juju Nealy (10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists) scored in double figures for the 16th straight game.

Freshman forward Mia Sullivan-Sanders and graduate student Peyton Young combined for 17 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. They shot a combined 7 of 14 from the field and 2 for 4 on 3-pointers.

"We are correcting things and making adjustments," said Lasell University Women's Basketball Head Coach Kelley Sundberg. "Next step is producing a win."

The Blue Jays (12-9, 8-6 GNAC) received 55 of their 68 points off the bench. Amanda Fudge dropped a game-high 20 points, to go along with eight boards and a team-leading five assists. Jordan Ouellette finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Cheyenne-Mone Smith also corralled 13 boards.

Lasell scored the first six points of the game, featuring a pair of layups by Carroll and two free throws by Nealy. A trey by senior guard Marie Zampano gave the hosts a 9-3 advantage with 6:09 left.

A jumper by Ouellette at the first-quarter buzzer put the visitors in front, 16-14, at the end of one. The Jays won the second quarter, 17-9, and took a 33-23 lead into halftime on a layup by Jelly Frigo with 16 seconds remaining.

A layup by Fudge gave Saint Joseph a 50-33 cushion with 1:30 left in the third. The Lasers mounted a comeback and cut a 16-point, fourth-quarter deficit down to seven at 61-54 on a layup by DePina with 2:32 on the clock. Lasell came to within six twice in the final minute, but the Jays secured the seven-point triumph.

The Lasers held a 42-26 advantage in points in the paint and a 15-14 lead in assists. 

Lasell will take on GNAC-rival Anna Maria on senior day Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Athletic Center. Prior to the game, Carroll, Young and Zampano will be honored for their fabulous collegiate careers.
