WBK: Lasell stuns Suffolk in OT; Young drains buzzer-beating three-pointer for the win

NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Peyton Young (Douglas, Mass.) drained a three-pointer as time expired Saturday afternoon as Lasell University upset Suffolk University in overtime, 62-59, in a dramatic Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at the Lasell Athletic Center.

The Lasell victory marks the first over Suffolk since the Lasers joined the GNAC in 2007, breaking a 12-game losing streak. Lasell improves to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the GNAC this season, while Suffolk drops to 10-5 and 2-1. The Lasers have eclipsed last year's win total with the most victories since the 2015-16 team won 12 games.

Young sank two free throws with 16 seconds remaining in the extra session to put Lasell ahead 59-56, but Suffolk freshman Lily Patneaude (Taunton,  Mass.) hit a tying three-pointer with five seconds to play. After a potential game-winning free throw by Suffolk was off the mark, Lasell junior Precious Montgomery (Bridgeport, Conn.) collected the rebound and quickly got the ball up the court to Young, who had just enough time to fire home the game-winner.

Lasell nearly won the game at the end of regulation after senior D'Asia Allen (Providence, R.I.) made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to put the Lasers up 51-48, but junior Jenni-Rose DiCecco (Falmouth, Mass.) drained a game-tying three-pointer with 2.2 seconds on the clock and the Lasers couldn't score before time ran out.

Young led a contingent of four Lasers who scored in double figures, finishing with 15 points. Senior Amanda Ortiz (Newton, Mass.) added 14 points and 15 rebounds, Allen contributed 13 points, and Montgomery was good for 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

Sophomore Allie Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) led all scorers with 17 points for the Rams, sinking five three-pointers, while junior Gabriella DeComo (Portsmouth, R.I.) added 12 points and senior Alexis Hackett (Charlton, Mass.) contributed 12 rebounds.

The Lasers are home again on Tuesday, January 21, hosting Albertus Magnus College in a GNAC contest at 7 p.m. The Rams are on the road again on Tuesday, visiting Anna Maria College for a 7 p.m. GNAC match-up.
