WBK: Lasell snubbed by Emerson; Ortiz scores double digits in ninth straight game

BOSTON, Mass. – The Lasell University women's basketball team hit the road on Tuesday night to square off with the Emerson Lions in a non-conference match. The home team snuck out with a 60-48 victory over the Lasers in tightly contested game.

Lasell and Emerson both leave the match tonight with records of 5-4 overall.

Senior Amanda Ortiz (Newton, Mass.) led the Lasers with 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Juniors Precious Montgomery (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Meg Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) finished with eight points each.

Three of the five starters for the home Lions finished scoring in double digits. Junior Sam Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) had the team-high 14 points while juniors Ashley Toner (Barnegat, N.J.) and Rachel Davey (Saratoga, Calif.) contributed with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the first, but the Lasers scored four straight to trail by one, halfway through the first quarter. The home team managed to hold the lead after the first by a score of 12-10.

After trailing the entire first quarter and most of the second, with 6:42 left in the half, the Lasers took their first lead of the game at 16-15. The visiting Lasers would continue on to hold that lead heading into the locker rooms at the break, 25-23.

The Lions found their offense in the third frame and outscored the Lasers 23-9, finding themselves with a 12-point lead heading into the fourth. Ortiz scored the first five points of the quarter and cut the deficit to seven with 7:30 remaining. But, the Lions didn't let up and finished the game on a 14-9 scoring run.

The Lasers will wrap up the semester on Saturday, December 14 with a non-conference game at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon. Emerson will also play on Saturday against Johnson & Wales.
