Franklin, MA - The Lasell University softball team was in action on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Bulldogs of Dean College. They took both games on the day, getting 13-3 and 4-2 victories.
Game 1
In the first outing, the Lasers got the offense started early with five runs across the first two innings. Shyanne Raccio's 2-RBI double in the top of the second brought in Emily Rondeau and Emily Mestas making it 5-0. After Meghan Theall added an RBI single in the fourth inning, the Lasers busted the game open in the fifth with a seven-run performance. They would bat around the lineup and Theall who brought in a run the inning prior, would cap the inning with two more RBIs on another single, and put the Lasers in mercy rule range, 13-2. The Bulldogs were able to manufacture one run but couldn't get it back under 10, as the Lasers took game one, 13-3 in five innings.
Game 2
The second matchup was a lower-scoring affair as runs were harder to come by. In the second inning, Madalen Brown had an RBI single which was the lone run of the game until the 5th inning. Alyssa Bland in the 5th, added a second run for the Lasers. After her leadoff single, she used her legs on the bases to steal second and third and then reached home on a wild pitch. Holding a 2-0 lead, Dean then scraped together two runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game 2-2 going into the 7th. In the top of the 7th, Katie Hopkins came to the plate with 2 outs in a bases-loaded situation. She came up clutch for the Lasers as a single drove in two runs and put the Lasers back up 4-2, needing three outs for the win. The Bulldogs threatened with multiple baserunners, but a critical play at the plate stopped a run from scoring. Then just needing one more out, a flyout to Rylee Herr in leftfield secured the game-two win and the Lasers' first doubleheader sweep of the season.
Abigail Fortin gained her second win on the season in the first game going 5 innings and adding in 3 K's. Meghan Theall earned her first win of the year in game two with Fortin coming in relief to earn the save. Emily Rondeau had two hits, three runs scored, and three RBIs across the two games for the Lasers. Shyanne Raccio would add three hits and three RBIs with Katie Hopkins providing three hits, two runs, and two RBIs.
Up Next - The Lasers will be at home for the first time this season on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader against the Elms College Blazers.
