SB: Lasers Swept by Rams in Non-Conference Action

Newton, MA – The Lasell University softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the Framingham State Rams on Tuesday evening, 9-4 and 9-0. The sweep sets the Lasers back to 20-13 on the year. The wins for the Rams move them up to 16-12 this season.

 

Game 1

Lasell got off to an eaerly lead in game one as starting pitcher Eryn Sheeley helped herself, blasting a solo home run to get things started in the second inning. After the Sheeley bomb, singles from Meghan Theall and Alyssa Bland gave them runners on first and second for Ally Kirck who would smack a double to left field, scoring both runners, and extending the lead to three.

The Rams would get two back in the third when Haley Jensen singled to left with the bases load, bringing them within one. In the fourth, two errors in the inning would allow two more Rams to score giving them a 4-3 lead. Later on in the fifth with runners on first and second, the Rams' Kelsey McGuill would double to right field, scoring both runners and extending the Ram lead to three.

Framingham State would grab three more runs in the next two innings, giving them a 9-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. With the lasers last chance to make a comeback, Brianna Gendreau would reach first on a fielder's choice and then advance to second on a wild pitch. Junior Emily Mestas would single her in making it a 9-4 game, but Lasell could not get any more offense, ending the game there.

Sheeley (9-4) was charged with the loss as she threw six innings allowing seven runs on nine hits while walking six and striking out four.

Offensively, Kirck doubled, singled, and drove in two runs. Sheeley homered and drove in a run, Mestas singled and also drove in a run. Emily Rondeau doubled, Theall singled twice and Bland also singled.

 

Game 2

Game two got off to a much slower start as both sides were held scoreless up until the third inning when the Rams got two quick base runners and Makayla Rooney doubled them in. After a wild pitch advanced her to third, McGuill singled to left to score Rooney. Another double would give them runners on the corners for Eliza Carignan who doubled to center field and gave Framingham State a 5-0 lead.

The Rams scraped across another run in the fourth on a wild pitch and a three-run home run in the fifth off the bat of Gwendolyn Carpenter ended the game due to mercy rule and the rams left with a 9-0 victory.

Abby Fortin (9-4) got the start for the Lasers. She earned the loss as she tossed all five innings, allowing nine runs on ten hits while walking one and striking out three.

Offensively for Lasell, Mestas and Rondeau collected the only two hits, both singling.

 

Up Next: The Lasers are on the road tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader with the Worcester State Lancers. First pitch of game one is slated for 4:00 PM.
