Top-Moment Series: Softball defeats Johnson & Wales, 5-3, on April 2

NEWTON, Mass. - The Lasell University softball team showcased its immense potential on April 2.

Katie Hopkins went 2-of-3 batting, with five RBIs, two home runs and two runs scored and pitcher Eryn Sheeley earned the complete-game win and only gave up three runs, as the Lasers defeated the eventual GNAC champions in Johnson & Wales, 5-3, on Taylor Field.

Samara Turgeon, Brianna Gendreau, Matara Tamzarian, Sheeley and Angelena Piers each recorded a hit in the victory, as the Lasers overcame a two-run deficit in the first inning.

A two-run shot by Hopkins to left evened the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the first. With a Wildcat runner on second and one out in the top of the third, Turgeon threw out the base runner during an attempted steal of third, as the Lasers refused to allow any runs in the inning.

During the bottom of the third, Turgeon and Gendreau tallied a one-out walk and single, respectively, and then during the ensuing at-bat, Hopkins blasted the game-winning, three-run homer to right.

Sheeley struck out the side in order during the second and retired five straight batters between the first and third innings. She struck out seven batters in the game and threw strikes on 73-of-122 pitches. Neither team made an error in the game.
