Softball: Lasers fall to Monks in season and conference finale

Standish, Maine – The Lasell University Lasers softball team fell in the season and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) finale to the Saint Joseph's College Monks, 7-0 and 9-5, Saturday afternoon at Richard W. Bailey Field.

Game 1 Lasell 0 Saint Joseph's 7

The Monks got the scoring started in the second inning as senior Ashley Emery (Madison, Maine) singled to center field bringing home senior Emily Jefferds (Scarborough, Maine).

Saint Joseph's added two more in the third inning first on an RBI double to left center by sophomore Taylor Owen (Wakefield, Mass.) to bring home senior Bailey Rassol (Rehoboth, Mass.). The second run of the inning came home on another RBI single by Jefferds that allowed Owen to score.

Rassol brought home the fourth run of the game for the Monks in the fourth with an RBI double to bring home Emery. Freshman Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Mass.) added another with an RBI single to right field scoring Rassol. Sophomore Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) brought home Foley and herself with a two-run homerun to left field to give the Monks a seven-run advantage.

Junior Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) got the start and win for the Monks going the distance while only allowing five hits and striking out 13 Lasers. Emery led the way with three hits and an RBI. Rassol, Foley, and Owen all had two hits and one RBI. Goodnough drove in two for the Monks while Owen and Jefferds drove in one for the Monks.

Theall was solid at the plate going two for three at the plate and sophomore Katie Hopkins (Garden City Park, N.Y.) hit a double in the loss.

Lasell got on board first in game two at the first chance of asking as sophomore Eryn Sheeley (North Haven, Conn.) hit a three run to left field to score sophomore Ally Kirck (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Brianna Gendreau (Warren, R.I.)

The Monks answered in the bottom of the first on an RBI single up the middle by junior Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) scoring Emery.

The Lasers added another in the second on a single to center field by Gendreau to score freshman Samara Turgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.).

Saint Joseph's responded again first with an RBI single by Emery to bring home freshman Rylee Page (Somersworth, N.H.). Howe added two more RBIs in the second bringing home Emery and junior Amaya Dacier (Warwick, R.I.) to tie the game at four after two innings.

Turgeon responded for the Lasell in the third inning as her RBI single gave the Lasers the lead back as Hopkins came home to score.

The Monks answered right back as Page doubled to left center bring home Foley and was quickly brought home on a single through the right side by Dacier to take their first lead of the game.

The Monks added to the lead in the fourth inning as Foley hit an RBI single to right field to bring home freshman Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, Mass.). Page brought home another as her single to left field brought home Rassol and made it an 8-5 lead after four innings.

Saint Joseph's added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Page single down the right field line to bring home freshman Katie Bent (Andover, N.H.).

The Lasers could not get on the board with their final opportunity and fell in game two 9-5.

Junior Sydney Hatch (Newburgh, Maine) got the start and win for the Monks going four innings while giving up eight hits and five runs. Junior Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) got the save as she went three innings without allowing a hit and struck out two. Page led the Monks on offense going four for four at the plate while driving in three runs. Howe drove in three on two hits and Dacier also had two hits and drove in a run. Emery went two for three with an RBI while Foley also drove in a run for the Monks.

Hopkins got the start for the Lasers going three and a third innings while only giving up four earned runs. Theall came in and threw two and two thirds' innings only giving up five hits and one run while striking out two. Sheeley led the offense going two for three with three runs batted in and a home run. Gendreau also drove in a run on two hits and Turgeon drove in the other run for the Lasers. Kirck went two for four at the plate in the loss for Lasell.
