Softball: Lasers drop a pair to Albertus Magnus

NEWTON, Mass. - Samara Turgeon and Eryn Sheeley each finished with two hits for the Lasell University softball team in a doubleheader against Great Northeast Athletic Conference-rival Albertus Magnus Friday, as the Falcons, won the first game, 12-1, and emerged victorious, 13-3, during Game 2 in a pair of five-inning affairs on Taylor Field.

Game 1 (Albertus Magnus 12, Lasell 1 - 5 innings):

Turgeon went 1-of-2 batting and recorded one run, while Sheeley finished 1 for 2, to go along with one RBI, for the Lasers. Lasell (11-13, 4-4 GNAC) made one error and Albertus Magnus (24-6, 10-0- GNAC) did not make any miscues. The Falcons led the hits' category, 13-2.

Leading the way for the Falcons were Ivy Geloso (3 of 4, 4 RBIs, 3 runs, 2 home runs) and Angelina Ramada (3 for 3, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, triple). Starting pitcher Erin Dighello earned the win and threw a two-hitter in the five-inning victory. She gave up one earned run, struck out two and did not walk any batters.

Geloso gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, driving the first pitch of the game over the left-field fence. A two-run single from Ava Gladwin put the Falcons in front, 3-0, during the second.

During the bottom of the second, Turgeon tallied a one-out single to left, and then scored two at-bats later on an RBI double to center by Sheeley.

The Falcons blew the game open with an eight-run effort in the fourth, including a three-run shot by Geloso and a two-run homer by Kayla Resto (2 for 3, 3 RBIs, homer, double, run, walk). A two-run triple by Ramada and an RBI double by Karissa Kerrs (2 of 3, double, RBI) extended Albertus' lead to 11-1. A one-run double down the left-field line by Resto ended the scoring in the fifth.

Game 2 (Albertus Magnus 13, Lasell 3 - 5 innings):

Mackenzie Still, Emily Mestas, Brianna Gendreau, Katie Hopkins, Turgeon, Sheeley and Ally Kirck each tallied one hit for the Lasers. Gladwin (4 for 4, 3 RBIs, run) and Jess Stettinger (3 of 3, 4 runs, home run, double, RBI, walk) led the way for the Falcons. Skylar Arent earned the win in the circle for the Falcons, giving up three earned runs and seven hits, while striking out four and walking one during five innings.

The Falcons built a 4-0 advantage during the first inning, and then a solo home rrun by Stettinger gave the visitors a 5-0 cushion during the third. A two-run single by Gladwin and an RBI single by Geloso gave the unit an 8-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings. Two more runs by Albertus pushed the lead up to 10-0 in the fourth.

During the bottom half of the fourth, Lasell found its way onto the scoreboard, as Kirck connected on a two-run, two-out single down the right-field line. During the top half of the fifth, Arent blasted a two-run home run and Gladwin registered a two-out, one-run single to left, pushing the lead up to 13-2.

Still led off the bottom half of the fifth with a walk, and then Mestas connected on a double down the left-field line. Still scored the game's final run on an RBI single through the right side by Gendreau. The Falcons led the hits' category, 16-7.

The Lasers will compete against GNAC-rival Regis in a doubleheader Wednesday, with game times set for 5 and 7 p.m. in Weston, Massachusetts.
