Softball: Lasers split two-game series with Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lasell University softball team went 1-1 at Worcester State Tuesday, winning, 7-2, in Game 2 and losing, 3-2, in Game 1, as four Lasers recorded multi-hit performances in the second-game victory.

The Lasers (3-7) were led in the second game by Katie Hopkins (3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 doubles, RBI), Meghan Theall (2 of 2, 2 runs, 2 walks), Eryn Sheeley (2 for 4, triple, run) and Mackenzie Still (2 for 5, double, RBI). Theall earned her first collegiate victory in Game 2, going the distance in the circle and only giving up one earned run and five hits. She did not walk a single batter and struck out two.

Junior Matara Tamzarian went 2 of 3 in Game 1, to go along with one RBI and one run. Emily Bartlett led the way in the first game for the Lancers (5-7), going 2 for 2, with one triple, one double and one RBI. Bartlett went the distance in the circle and earned the win, giving up one earned run and four hits, while striking out eight and walking five.

Game 2 (Lasell 7, Worcester State 2):

The Lasers opened the scoring with a four-run second inning, including an RBI double by Hopkins and a one-run single by freshman Samara Turgeon. Lasell took a 6-0 lead with two more runs in the fifth, which included a one-run single to right by junior Angelena Piers

The Lancers responded with a run in the fifth and sixth, trimming the deficit to 6-2. An RBI on a sacrifice bunt by Piers in the top half of the seventh extended the visitors' lead to 7-2 and ended the scoring.

Lasell held an 11-5 advantage in hits. Theall retired the side in order during the third and seventh innings.

Game 1 (Worcester State 3, Lasell 2):

A one-run triple to right-center by Bartlett gave the Lancers a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. During the top half of the second, Tamzarian tallied a one-out single up the middle, and then scored two at-bats later on a one-run single to right by Piers.

Worcester claimed a 3-1 advantage with two runs in its half of the second, including an RBI triple down the right-field line by Brynna Meeker. Senior Brianna Gendreau drew a leadoff walk in the third, and then crossed home three batters later on a one-run single through the left side by Tamzarian, trimming the Lancers' advantage to 3-2.

Each team finished with four hits. Sheeley pitched six innings for Lasell, allowing only one earned run and four hits, while striking out four and walking two.

Up Next:

The Lasers will compete in their home opener Saturday with games at 1 and 3 p.m. against UMaine-Farmington on Taylor Field.
