NEWTON, Mass. – Lasell College scored 21 runs on 24 hits Saturday afternoon as the Lasers swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball doubleheader from Anna Maria College at Taylor Field, winning the first game 12-0 in five innings before taking the nightcap in six innings, 9-1.
The Lasers improve to 8-29 overall and 4-11 in GNAC games, while the Amcats drop to 3-22 overall and 0-14 in conference play.
Lasell has been eliminated from GNAC play-off contention, but the unfinished game from Friday, April 26, against Albertus Magnus College could affect the play-off picture for the Falcons. A final determination regarding the completion of that game will be made following this weekend's games.
Game 1 – Lasell 12, Anna Maria 0 (5 innings)
Lasell took control of the game right out of the gate, scoring eight runs in the first inning. Junior Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) started the scoring barrage with an RBI double, and sophomore Nicolette Genkos (Worcester, Mass.) followed with an RBI single. Junior Sarah Kline (Vernon, Conn.) had a two-run single to left in the rally, and freshman Brianna Gendreau (Warren, R.I.) finished off the inning with an RBI single up the middle.
The Lasers tacked on three runs in the third inning, two coming home on a bases-loaded two-run single by junior Arianna Genovese (Rocky Hill, Conn.). Gendreau brought home Lasell's final run with an RBI ground out in the fourth inning.
Anna Maria managed just one hit in the game, a first-inning single by senior Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Conn.). Sophomore Hannah Doherty (Hampton, N.H.) earned her third win of the season for Lasell with a complete-game one-hit shutout, striking out five.
Gendreau finished with three hits for Lasell, while Spellman, Genovese and sophomore Alexis Truesdale (Wakefield, Mass.) had two hits each.
Game 2 – Lasell 9, Anna Maria 1 (6 innings)
The Amcats came alive in the first inning, scoring a run when Carreira doubled to left center with one out and came around to score on a two-out double by senior Kayla Magierowski (Brimfield, Mass.). Lasell tied the score in the second inning on a bloop RBI single down the right field line by freshman Kelsey Scannevin (Harpswell, Maine).
The Lasers took control with a five-run third inning. Spellman and freshman Hailey Haskins (Franklin, N.H.) hit RBI singles, sophomore Bethany Hector (Jaffrey, N.H.) blasted a two-run double to center, and Scannevin added an RBI single down the third-base line.
The home team added two more runs in the fifth inning, starting with Truesdale being hit by a pitch, stealing second and third bases and coming home on an infield grounder. Gendreau then ripped a double down the third base line and Spellman belted an RBI triple to right center. Lasell closed out the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Genkos.
Haskins earned the complete-game victory for Lasell, allowing one run on four hits, striking out one. Haskins, Gendreau, Spellman and Scannevin had two hits apiece for the offense. Carreira had a pair of doubles for the visitors.
