Softball picks up 4th Conference Victory with Extra Inning Win

Lasell College split a doubleheader against Albertus Magnus, falling to the Falcons in the opener, before pulling out an extra inning win in the second game. Albertus moved to 8-12 overall and 4-8 in the Great Northeast athletic conference, while Lasell improved to 4-18 overall and 4-8 in the GNAC.

Game One:

Freshman Aimee Mirto (Hamden, CT) recorded a two-out walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the Falcons' game-winning run as the Albertus Magnus softball team picked up a 3-2 GNAC victory over Lasell on Sunday afternoon.

Albertus entered the bottom of the seventh inning with the scored tied at two after scoring a run in the fifth thanks to a Mirto RBI single. With two outs in the seventh, freshman Elaina Maio (West Haven, CT) walked to reach base before Mirto drove in the game-winning run with her fourth double of the season.

Lasell was led by Candance Hankard (Wakefield, MA) as she recorded a solo home run in the fifth inning to give Lasell a 2-1 lead.

Mirto finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, CT) added a 2-for-4 performance as well. Maio tallied two runs for the Falcons along with a walk and a double.

Danielle Thuerling (Wallingford, CT) improved to 5-9 on the year with the victory as she gave up two runs and nine hits, while recording five strikeouts for the Falcons.

Cassie Wadden (Brookfield, MA) earned the loss to fall to 1-9 on the year from the mound. Wadden struck out eight but walked five batters and gave up nine hits in 6.2 innings of work.

Game Two:

Lasell scored three-runs in the top of the ninth inning en route to an 8-6 GNAC win over the Albertus Magnus softball team on Sunday. Three hits and an Albertus error put the Lasers ahead 8-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth before they earned their fourth victory of the season.

Lasell's Talia DeChiara (Kingston, MA) recorded an RBI single with a runner on base, due to the international rule, to give the Lasers' a 6-5 lead. An RBI single by Denise Archetto (Cranston, RI) extended the Lasers' lead to two before a walk with the bases loaded gave Lasell an 8-5 advantage.

In the bottom of the frame, Albertus scored one run on one hit but the Falcons' rally was cut short as they fell 8-6 in extra innings. With the loss, the Falcons move to 8-12 on the year and 4-8 in the league standings.

Lasell had five player's record two hits apiece, and Candace Hankard and Ashley Pearson (Lincoln, RI) each drove in two runs.  

The Falcons were led by freshman Aimee Mirto (Hamden, CT) who went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI as she recorded her second home run of the season.

In the opening frame, Albertus took an early 3-0 lead thanks to Mirto's homer before Lasell tallied a run in each of the next four innings to take a 4-3 lead.

After taking a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh, the Falcons answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run inning to force the game into extras. Shannon Knox (Hamden, CT) led off the inning with a base hit before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, CT). Knox then advanced to third on a ground out to second and scored on an Elaina Maio (West Haven, CT) single. Mirto followed with a base hit of her own before Melissa Manning (Milford, CT) hit an RBI single to plate Maio and tie the game at five.

Danielle Thuerling (Wallingford, CT) moved to 5-10 on the year with the loss as she gave up five earned runs, 13 hits and one walk in nine innings of work.

Alison Saluti (Braintree, MA) went nine innings to earn the win for Lasell, striking out seven while allowing six runs, five earned.
