Men's Track & Field: 2021-22 Lasers' season recap

NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman Brady Mackechnie inserted his name into four individual events inside the Lasell University men's track & field record book during the 2021-22 season, while juniors Ben Abely and Zachary Kirsch set new program records in two individual events, respectively.

Mackechnie holds school records in the indoor 60-meter high hurdles (9.51), to go along with the outdoor 110 hurdles (16.09), 400 hurdles (59.86) and javelin throw (44.16). Abely set program-bests in the indoor 60 (7.26) and 200 meters (23.12), while Kirsch broke records during the indoor (12.89) and outdoor triple jump (11.82).

During the outdoor season, Richard Barlett posted a program record of 11.05 in the shot put at the Penmen Relays on April 16 in Hooksett, New Hampshire. Abely, Max Corson, Kadeem Ambroise and Mackechnie clocked a school-best time of 44.72 in the 4x100-meter relay on April 23 at the Pre-Conference meet. During the Penmen Relays, Mackechnie, Corson, Ambroise and Patrick Carbone made school history when they tallied a time of 4:00.86 in the 1,600 sprint medley relay.

The Lasers earned five GNAC weekly awards. Abely was named Track Athlete of the Week twice, Kirsch earned a Field Athlete of the Week honor once and Mackechnie and Corson each took home one Rookie of the Week award. At the conclusion of the season, Mackechnie was named the conference's Rookie of the Year and the team earned the GNAC's Sportsmanship honor.

Mackechnie put a stamp on his stellar rookie season, as he recorded a school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.09 during the Division III New England Championships at Williams College on May 6. During the 2021-22 season, Mackechnie earned first-place recognition in four individual events, while Abely and Kirsch each accomplished the feat twice. The Lasers also took home first-place recognition in two team-oriented relay events.
