Newton, MA-- League leading Lasell College
prevailed over the Johnson & Wales University men's
soccer team, 2-0, on Monday afternoon at Taylor Field. The Lasers
remain undefeated in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with
the win at 5-0-1 while advancing to 6-5-1 overall. The
Wildcats recede to 2-9-1 this season and 1-5-0 in
league.
Senior forward Dan Hatch (Avon, MA) pulled Lasell ahead
at 4:23 on a solo venture dribbling past a Wildcat defender and
releasing outright on the Wildcats net from just outside the six
yard box.
For the following 40 minutes, Lasell and Johnson &
Wales went shot-for-shot and nearly save-for-save without amending
the score. Both squads had produced nine total shot
attempts, including five shots-on-goal each, by the halftime
break. Lasell goaltender Matthew Bruninghaus (Plymouth, MA)
turning away all five Wildcat opportunities and Johnson & Wales
netminder Joe Ferraro (Freehold, NJ) made four saves on attempts by
Lasell.
The back-and-forth continued through the first 10
minutes, at which point Lasell picked up their play and ended up
outshooting the visitors 17-5 in the second half. The
momentum turned into a second goal in the final forty seconds of
the game when Isaac Soares (Somerset, MA) found Marcus Lopez
(Barrigada, Guam) just over the midfield line. Lopez
collected the pass and unleashed a monster shot from 28 yards out
which scored just inside the right post to finalize the score at
2-0.
Bruninghaus finished with six saves en route to his
sixth season win. Ferraro turned aside 11 shots by the Lasers
in the defeat.
Lasell returns to non-conference action on Wednesday,
October 13th when they will host Haverford College at 4:00 p.m. on
Taylor Field.
