Lasers Stun GNAC Favorites St. Joseph's Me. with a 3-0 Shutout

Standish, ME-- Great Northeast Athletic Conference reigning men's soccer champion and preseason favorites St. Joseph's College of Maine were blanked by Lasell College, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Westerlea Way Field. Freshman midfielder Nery Guerra (Guatemala) locked in the game-winner mid-way through the second period, while junior goal keeper Matthew Bruninghaus (Plymouth, MA) turned away seven shots in the shutout victory.

Lasell utilized an offensive burst mid-way through the second half to score three goals in over a six minute span starting in the 59th minute.  Guerra broke the stalemate with a header off an Isaac Sores (Somerset, MA) corner kick giving Lasell the break-out goal.

As Lasers harnessed the momentum in their favor, senior forward Dan Hatch (Avon, MA) scored the two final tallies of the game.  Hatch tore his way into the box to drive his first shot off the right post and was awarded the obligatory second chance when the ball was returned right back to his possession for the easy finish, at 60:33.

Less than four minutes later, Hatch dodged his way through the Monks back field and converted on a Marcus Lopez (Barrigada, Guam) pass with a shot to the top right corner.

Both teams had excellent scoring opportunities in the 90 minute game, Lasell producing a 25-19 advantage in shots, and a 10-7 shot-on-goal edge. Bruninghaus was rewarded with his second season shutout, while Monks keeper Nick Campasano (Goffstown, NH) notched seven saves in the loss.

Lasell College remains undefeated in the GNAC with a 2-0 record (3-3 overall) as they play host to Rivier College on Saturday, September 25th at noon on Taylor Field.
