ANCHORMEN TAKE DOWN LASELL, 3-0

Providence, RI- Freshman forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) recorded his first career goal and dished out two assists four points as Rhode Island College blanked Lasell, 3-0, in collegiate men¹s soccer action on Wednesday evening. The Anchormen win for the second straight game and improve to 2-3, while the Lasers suffer their third loss (0-3) of the season.

Costa outworked a defender after being sent in on a junior forward Dan Rodrigues (Cumberland, RI) pass and beat Lasell junior goalkeeper Julian Dutton (Madison, CT) with a soft shot that snuck inside the far right post in the 20th minute.

Despite holding an eight-shot advantage (13-5) at the break, RIC led by just the one goal (1-0). The Anchormen scored a pair of insurance goals in a six-minute span as sophomore midfielder Adam Philbin (Cumberland, RI) tapped in a Costa crossing pass into a vacant net for his first collegiate marker in the 51st minute.

The Lasers did find opportunities to score, predominantly in the second half, as they outshot Rhode Island 14-7. Senior, midfielder Joseph Acuek (Lincoln, MA) recorded 6 shots, and 2 shots on goal for the Lasers, while teammates Dan Hatch (Avon, MA), Paul Meucci (Vernon, CT), and Robert Gonzalez (Palmdale, CA) each attempted 2 shots a peice. Unfortunately, the Lasers could not connect with the net.

Sophomore midfielder Mike Diogo (Bristol, RI) sealed the victory in the 57th minute with his first collegiate tally, blasting shot into the net off of a tic-tac-toe pass from junior midfielder Ryan Kelley (Hope, RI) and Costa. Dutton made six stops in a losing effort (0-3).

It was a physical contest, in which the two club's combined for 39 fouls and nine yellow cards.

The Lasers will start conference play on Saturday, September 13th at St. Joseph's College (ME). Following that game, Lasell will open up at home against Clark University, on September 17th, at 4:00 p.m.
