Newton, Mass. - Lasell College cast a shadow over neighboring rival school Mount Ida College today in men's soccer, as they defeated the Mustangs, 6-0. The victors played intense throughout the matchup, never letting down for a second, in front of a rowdy crowd of over 300 on Taylor Field.
A scoreless first fifteen minutes was broken by Lasell's leading point scorer this season, Dan Hatch (Avon, MA). Hatch coaxed the Mustangs goalkeeper, Kevin DosSantos (Cumberland, RI) out of net then made a move around him to score on the open goal.
Lasell's defense, led by Brandon Hanns (Halifax, MA), Paul Meucci (Vernon, CT), and Rocco Mazzaferro (Niskayuna, NY) played with a continuous fervor, renouncing numerous Mustang opportunities. The Lasers then pulled further ahead with a minute left in the half, when Tholemson Francois (Stoughton, MA) picked up a deflected save off DosSantos and drilled the returned ball back into the Mustangs net.
Lasell continued to rack up the points after the break, with senior, captain Zach Gagne (Somerset, MA) twice adding to the Lasers advantage. Gagne's first scored off a direct kick from 25 feet out and then again on a penalty kick. Gagne subsequently assisted on the Lasers' fifth goal by Kyle Hermenegildo (Rehoboth, MA) who shot from close range to score.
The Lasers final goal was notched by Eric Swahlan (Ballston, Spa, NY) who fired in a shot off a crossed ball by Robert Gonzalez (Palmdale, CA).
DosSantos finished the game with 8 saves for the Mustangs, along with Lasers keeper Julian Dutton (Madison, CT) whom had 8 saves and recorded his fifth shutout this season.
The Lasers are now 9-5-0 overall, and 7-1-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Mount Ida drops to 7-5-3 overall, and 4-3-0 in the GNAC.
The Lasers are now on a five game winning streak as they head into non-conference action against UMass, Dartmouth, on Tuesday, October 21st, at 3:30, at Taylor Field.
