FH: Lasell blanks Regis in GNAC game; Duke scores game-winner for Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Rebecca Duke (Ijamsville, Md.) scored the only goal of the game late in the third quarter Saturday afternoon and Lasell University held on for a 1-0 victory over Regis College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey game at Grellier Field.

The outcome was Lasell's third win in a row as the Lasers improve to 6-7 overall and 4-1 in the GNAC, while the Pride drop to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Duke's goal, her fourth of the season, came with 2:26 to go in the third as she redirected a crossing pass from the right corner from senior Brooke Landry (New Milford, Conn.) with a hard shot just inside the left goal post.

Lasell had a 7-4 advantage in shots in a scoreless first half. The Lasers had the best scoring chance with five minutes left in the second quarter but a shot by freshman Kensie Lennon (Jamestown, R.I.) was deflected just wide by Regis junior goalie Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine).

The home team took all four shots in the third quarter, and the Pride returned the favor with all four shots in the fourth frame. Regis' best chance came with 11 minutes remaining on back-to-back shots by freshmen Amelia Thomas (Hopkinton, N.H.) and Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, Mass.) but both were kicked aside by Lasell sophomore goalie Sofia Rodriguez (Peabody, Mass.).

Rodriquez finished with four saves to post her first career shutout. Winkin wound up with eight saves for the Pride.

Lasell is back in action on Thursday, October 19, with a non-conference game at New England College (7 p.m.). Regis returns home to host Mount Holyoke College on Thursday in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
