NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell University field hockey team took down the Clark University Cougars Tuesday evening at Grellier Field, 3-2 in overtime. The Lasers improve to 5-7 while Clark drops to 7-5.

Lasell freshman Kensie Lennon (Jamestown, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal just over three minutes into overtime to send the Lasers to victory. Lasell was awarded a penalty corner, senior Sam Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) played the ball perfectly in front for Lennon who struck the ball into the back of the net.

Both teams relied heavily on their defense for the majority of the match. Senior Mindy Esposito (Sunderland, Mass.) operated the back line for the Lasers and handled the offense of the Cougars. Neither team produced many shots on goal. Lasell ended with 6 shots on target while Clark finished with 7.

Junior Rebecca Duke (Ijamsville, Md.), Lennon, and Taylor scored the three goals for the Lasers. Clark freshman Abigail Cravinho (Bello Falls, Vt.) and junior Carden Maloney (Worcester, Mass.) scored the two goals for the Cougars.

Both goalies, Sofia Rodriguez (Peabody, Mass.) of Lasell, and Grace Sawyer (Windham, Maine) of Clark recorded three saves in the match.

No goals were scored in the first 25 minutes of the game until the Lasers struck first. Duke placed home her third goal of the season with an assist from junior Megan Horrigan (Wakefield, Mass.).

The Lasers' second goal came from Taylor in the third period as she weaved through the defense and found some space to get off a shot that got passed the goalie. The Cougars answered nearly a minute later with a goal of their own from Cravinho.

With less than a minute remaining in the match, Lasell led 1-2, Clark gained control of a scramble in front of the Lasers' net and scored to tie the game 2-2 and send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, Lasell dominated as it out-shot Clark 4-1. Lennon would go on to score the winning goal off the penalty corner after six minutes of play.

The Lasers will play next in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match against Regis on Saturday, October 12 at noon. Clark University will face Babson College next on Saturday, October 12 at noon.
