FH: Lasell defeated by WPI; Maxim scores lone goal for Lasers

WORCESTER, Mass. – Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist while Shannon Hynes (Auburn, Mass.) chipped in with what proved to be the game-winner Tuesday evening as WPI remained unbeaten with a 5-1 non-conference field hockey triumph over visiting Lasell University at the Rooftop Field.

Freshman Mya Maxim (South China, Maine) scored the only goal for the Lasers in the second quarter, which tied the score at 1-1 at the time.

The Engineers (8-0) are off to their best start since 1992. The Crimson and Gray are also now 3-0 all-time on Rooftop Field. The Lasers, who handed then-undefeated WPI (7-0) its first loss a season ago with a 4-3 overtime triumph in Newton, dips to 2-6 on the year.

WPI took the initial lead when O'Sullivan setup Bridget Sullivan's (Wilmington, Mass.) fifth goal of the season at 3:32 before Maxim responded at 21:34 with an unassisted goal for Lasell. With time expired in the first half, Hynes finished off a penalty corner that saw Carlee Irish (Saratoga Springs N.Y.) insert the ball and Holly Mason (Plymouth, N.H.) make the stick stop for the 2-1 advantage.

O'Sullivan then struck in the third for her 10th goal of the campaign, this time with help from Carly Cidado (Easton, Mass.) at 35:19. The Engineers later pulled away with a pair in the fourth thanks to Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, N.H.), from Angie Ferro (Northboro, Mass.), at 50:34, and Julia Vanderstreet (West Bridgewater, Mass.) at 57:59.

Maxim accounted for the Lasers' lone shot on-goal while senior Sam Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) also took a shot for the guests. Sophomore Sofia Rodriguez (Peabody, Mass.) stopped 14 shots in the first 45 minutes and Chloe Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.) halted three in the remainder of the contest.

Ali Gannon (Fremont, N.H.) did not have to make a save for the Engineers who outshot the Lasers 38-2 and were awarded 11 of 13 penalty corners.

WPI moves back to Alumni Stadium Friday for a 4:30pm meeting with Becker. Lasell hosts Anna Maria Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at noon.
