NEWTON, Mass. – Freshman Mya Maxim (South China, Maine) scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, as Lasell University outlasted Becker College, 2-1, in the field hockey season opener for both schools Friday afternoon at Grellier Field.

Senior Izzy Contois (Conway, Mass.) added a goal and an assist for the Lasers, who came back from a 2-0 fourth-quarter deficit to pull out the win. Contois put the Lasers on the board with an unassisted goal with 12:27 remaining in regulation to cut the deficit to 2-1. Maxim deflected home the ball in the slot on a Contois shot from the top of the circle after freshman Kaylie Gonya (Uxbridge, Mass.) started the penalty corner play. That tied the score at 2-2 with 2:51 to play, setting up the overtime.

Maxim rammed home the game-winner from the right side on a Laser 2-on-1, beating the goalie inside the right goal post.

Freshman Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass.) scored both goals for the Hawks. She tallied the only goal of the first half with her first marker midway through the second quarter, and extended the Becker lead to 2-0 with her second goal three-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter.

Lasell finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 margin in the big fourth quarter. Junior Sydney Pignone (Ipswich, Mass.) earned the victory in goal for Lasell, making six saves. Freshman Baileigh Griese (Woodstock, N.Y.) played the first two quarters and the overtime for Becker, while classmate Victoria Pilpel (Germantown, Md.) made four saves while guarding the goal in the third and fourth quarters.

Lasell (1-0) is back in action on Wednesday, September 4, with a non-conference game at Keene State College (6:30 p.m.) Becker returns home for its home debut on Tuesday, September 3, vs. Regis College (4 p.m.)
