Lasell Collects Second Victory with 2-1 Defeat of Wheelock in Women’s Field Hockey

Newton, Mass. – The Lasell College women's field hockey team earned a non-conference victory over the visiting Wildcats from Wheelock College. The win improves Lasell to 2-3 on the year, while Wheelock drops to 0-4 on the season.

Samantha Smithers (Yarmouth, Mass.) and Kate Fabri (Fairfield, Conn.) notched goals for Lasell, while Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, Conn.) tallied for Wheelock. Cassie Aviles (Bellingham, Mass.) picked up her second win of the year with eight saves for Lasell, while Michelle Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) made three saves while taking the loss in goal for the Wildcats.

Smithers got Lasell on the board in the opening half, when a Francesca Ceppetelli(Enfield, Conn.) drove a cross across the front of the net which Smithers knocked past Greene with just over 15 minutes to play in the first half.

The Lasers took a 2-0 lead with just under three minutes to play in the second half when a Fabri shot found the goal on an assist from Ashley Gleason (Suffield, Conn.). The Wildcats continued to battle, and cut the hosts lead to 2-1 when Savvoulides fired a penalty stroke past Aviles with 2:10 remaining in the game. Wheelock was unable to create any more scoring chances in the final two minutes, and Lasell held on for the 2-1 victory.

Wheelock will take the field again on Thursday September 20th for a 4pm tilt against Framingham State University. Lasell head north to take on Husson University on Saturday September 15th at 6pm in their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference game of the season.
