New London, CT - The Lasell University baseball team played GNAC opponent Mitchell College on Tuesday afternoon. The Mariners would use a strong pitching performance to hold the Lasers to just one run and defeated the Lasers 5-1.
Coming into the game on a 6-game win streak, the Lasers faced the Mariners (12-13, 5-1 GNAC) who had also recently been on a winning streak, taking eight in a row before falling to New England College 8-1. After the Mariners put two runs up in the first inning, the Lasers got one back in the second off a CJ Mills RBI single, but left two baserunners stranded. In the bottom of the inning, the Mariners added to their lead manufacturing three more runs which gave them the 5-1 edge. From this point on, it became a pitcher's duel as neither team relinquished another run. The Lasers had a tough time dealing with Mariners Eddie Kaftan who struck out 10 batters on the day. Senior Adam Marsh for the Lasers did settle into the game after giving up the early runs, going 7 innings and striking out four, but they were unable to mount the comeback offensively.
CJ Mills 2-for-5 (RBI) and Scott Lyon 2-for-4 both had multi-hit performances for the Lasers on the afternoon.
Up Next - The Lasers will be on the road for a non-conference matchup against Fisher College on Thursday night at 7 PM.
