BSB: Lasers Lose Heartbreaker to Babson on Walk Off

Wellesley, MA – The Lasell University baseball team took a heartbreaking loss on Tuesday afternoon, losing to the Babson College Beavers 5-4 in non-conference action. The loss sets the Lasers back to 19-11 on the year while the Beavers improve to 15-8.

The Lasers got out ahead in the top of the first as CJ Mills led the game off with a double and after a Tim Callahan sacrifice bunt got him to third base, Mills would score on a wild pitch to put them up 1-0.

Lasell's Jeremy Blackwood got the start for the Lasers and he threw a gem, allowing just one earned run over six innings of play, keeping the game close as the Laser offense couldn't get anything going until later on in the game.

Babson would tie it in the fifth when a throwing error allowed a runner to score from second on an infield single. The next inning Babson would take the lead as John Nowack doubled in Tanner Santos and gave the Beavers a 2-1 lead.

Lasell would get back into it however when Ross Audet singled over the first baseman's head, scoring Scott Lyon from third. In the eighth inning, a walk and an error gave the Lasers runners on first and third with none out and a wild pitch would score another Laser run giving them a 3-2 lead. The runner on second, Callahan, stole third and ended up scoring as Lyon hit a sacrifice fly to right field and the Lasers led 4-2.

Babson would tie things in the bottom of the eighth as a wild pitch would score one run and they would tie it on a ground ball to second base with the bases loaded. The Lasers couldn't muster anything in the top of the ninth, allowing the beavers to win it in the bottom half. A hit by pitch and a sacrifice bunt gave them a runner on second and a ground rule double from Luke tanner sealed the deal, giving Babson the 5-4 win.

Blackwood went six innings for the Lasers, allowing 2 runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two.

Offensively, Audet had two hits for Lasell, driving in one run. Lyon singled and drove in a run as well and Mills also added a double.

Up Next: The Lasers travel to Dudley, Massachusetts for a matchup with the Nichols Bison on Thursday afternoon. First pitch will be at 3:30 pm.
