BSB: Tale of Two Games as Lasers Split with Amcats

Lynn, MA – The Lasell University Baseball team split a conference doubleheader with the Anna Maria Amcats on Saturday afternoon, 17-0 and 5-3. The split makes the Lasers 7-3 in GNAC play and 18-10 overall while the Amcats move to 4-7 in conference and 12-16 overall.

Game One:

The first game of this GNAC doubleheader would be very one sided as it was all Lasell. The Lasers got out in front early in the first inning as they had runners on second and third with none out and a Connor Freitas single would bring home one of those runners. The next batter, Scott Lyon would triple to right field and score both runs. After Ross Audet walked and stole second, Bryan Baumann would score Lyon from third with a ground ball to the shortstop. Two batters later, a Jared Whitby single extended the Laser lead to five.

Lasell got back to work in the third as a fielder's choice and an error made it 7-0 Lasers. With runners on second and third, Freitas singled to give the Lasers two more and the Lasers led 9-0 after three. The fourth inning would be more of the same as back-to-back singles from Baumann and Dave Egan would leave runners on first and third. Back-to-back passed balls would score both Baumann and Egan. A single from CJ Mills would score Chris Bulk later in the inning.

Bryan Baumann would rip a triple to score two more Lasers in the fifth and Whitby would single in another runner for his third RBI of the day. In the sixth, Audet grounded to the second baseman scoring another run for the Lasers and Baumann also hit a groundball that scored the final Laser run.

Zach Simone was on the hill for the Lasers today and he threw an absolute gem. Simone dealt all seven innings allowing just one baserunner and striking out seven Amcats.

Offensively, for the Lasers Lyon tripled, doubled, and singled and drove in two runs. Baumann added a double and single and drove in four runs while Freitas singled twice and drove in three. Egan also singled three times and Whitby singled twice and drove in three. Mills also added a single and RBI.

Game Two:

Game two of this doubleheader was a lot slower than game one and was a lot tighter of a game as well. Lasell got out in front first as an RBI groundout from Whitby and a Tim Callahan single through the right side put the Lasers up 2-0 in the second inning.

Anna Maria cut the lead in half as a bases loaded walk drew in their first run of the day. The Lasers responded however as CJ Mills blasted a double off the right field wall to score Bulk and give the Lasers a 3-1 lead at the end of the sixth. The next inning, back-to-back doubles from Jarrod Marifiote and Kosta Drosidis brough the Amcats within one. Both sides were held scoreless in the eighth and in the ninth the Amcats Tommy Sasso singled to centerfield tying the ball game. The Lasers couldn't muster anything in the bottom half of the ninth, forcing extra innings.

In extras both sides went back and forth dueling with their relivers. For the Lasers Pierce Clare dealt for two and two-thirds striking out three and for the Amcats Tyler Godin threw four and two-thirds of no hit baseball and struck out six.

In the top of the twelfth Jarynn Barber doubled to center field scoring two and giving Anna Maria a 5-2 lead. Lasell would get a runner to third but couldn't score at all and Anna Maria would go onto win forcing the doubleheader split.

Matt Fletcher was on the bump for Lasell in game two. He earned the loss, but threw well going six innings, allowing six hits and one run while walking two and striking out nine.

Offensively, Mills doubled and singled, and drove in one run. Bulk also doubled and singled and Callahan singled twice and drove in a run. Lyon, and Egan also added singles.
