BSB: Lasers Continue Hot Streak with Conference Win Over NEC

Lynn, MA – The Lasell University baseball team defeated GNAC foe New England College on Tuesday night, 9-4. The victory improves Lasell's record to 17-7 overall and 6-1 in the GNAC. The Pilgrims now slip to 4-18 overall and 2-3 in GNAC play.

The bats started early in this one as Lasell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when senior Ross Audet blasted a bases clearing triple to right center and then he would score on a wild pitch just two pitches later giving the Lasers a 4-0 first inning lead. NEC would get themselves on the board in the next inning when a hit by pitch and single got runners into scoring position and a passed ball allowed one of those runners to score. The other would be left stranded and the Lasers held on to a 4-1 lead.

They would extend that lead in the bottom half of the second as Brad Edwards smacked a two RBI double down the right field line, scoring Tim Callahan and Chris Bulk. The very next batter, Scott Lyon singled up the middle to score Edwards and take a 7-1 lead.

The pilgrims managed to scratch across another run in the fifth as a ground out with runners on first and third drove one run in. The Lasers would add to their lead in the bottom half however as Lyon led off with a double to right field and a couple batters later, Bryan Baumann brought him in with a single through the left side of the infield making it 8-2 Lasers.

NEC would attempt to climb back into it in the eighth as Brady Philibotte singled up the middle with bases loaded to score two and pull them within four, 8-4. Lasell grabbed a run in the bottom of the eighth when Edwards doubled again, this time to score junior Jared Whitby. Owen Caldwell would go out for the ninth and shut things down, getting all three outs on strike outs and clinching the win for the Lasers.

Jeremy Blackwood (2-0) got the start for the Lasers, and earned the win, throwing five and two thirds, allowing two runs on seven hits while walking just one and striking out four.

Offensively for Lasell, all nine starters recorded a hit, but Edwards led the way with two doubles and three RBIs. Lyon also doubled and singled and drove in one. Audet tripled and drove in three runs, Bulk also tripled and drove in one run. Callahan added a double and Baumann, Whitby, CJ Mills and Connor Freitas all added a hit apiece.

Up Next: The Lasers travel to Framingham to take on the Framingham State Rams in non-conference action on Thursday. First pitch will be at 3:00 pm.
