BSB: Lasers Down Colby-Sawyer Chargers in Eight Innings

Waltham, MA - The Lasell University baseball team defeated GNAC foe Colby-Sawyer Chargers 16-6 in eight innings on Monday night. The win moved Lasell's record to 16-7 overall and 5-1 in conference as the chargers dropped to 11-8 overall and 2-1 in GNAC play.

Scoring got started in the second inning as Colby-Sawyer jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Devin Montalvo singled to right field, bringing in Evan Dennis and Nate Johnson. Lasell would respond in the bottom half of the inning as Bryan Baumann singled in Ross Audet and Jared Whitby tripled to right center to plate Chris Bulk and Baumann and give the Lasers a 3-2 lead.

The Chargers would tie it in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from Jenai Cruz, but Lasell took the lead back in the bottom half as Bulk singled up the middle to score two and CJ Mills doubled down the left field line to score Bulk. After four Lasell led 6-3.

Cruz would bring in another run for the Chargers in the sixth on a single up the middle to pull them within two, but the Lasers struck again when Brad Edwards ripped a double down the left field line to score two more runs and extend the Lasell lead to 8-4. Colby-Sawyer pulled themselves back within two after back-to-back RBI singles in the seventh.

Lasell would blow things wide open putting up four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Whitby continued to swing it well, doubling to right field, scoring Connor Freitas. A wild pitch would score another run and a Tim Callahan double would score Whitby making it an 11-6 ballgame. Edwards would collect another RBI on a sacrifice fly, plating Mills.

In the eighth, Baumann got things started reaching on an error that scored Audet. Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded scored two more and Callahan would go on to end it with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Bulk. The mercy rule would come into play there and the Lasers would go on to win 16-6.

Adam Marsh got the win for the Lasers, starting the game and going six innings allowing four runs on eight hits, while walking three and striking out six.

Offensively for the Lasers Whitby led the way smacking a double and a triple and driving in four runs while scoring two of his own. Mills also doubled and singled and drove in two, Callahan doubled and drove in two as well. Edwards doubled and drove in three runs, and Bulk and Baumann each had a hit and two RBIs apiece. Audet also pitched in with a single and Freitas doubled in the eighth.

 

Up Next: The Lasers are back in action tomorrow night facing off against the New England College Pilgrims in another GNAC matchup. First pitch is slated for 7:00 pm at Fraser Field in Lynn, Massachusetts.
