BSB: Lasers Offense Overtakes Rivier in 17-6 Mercy Rule

Waltham, M.A. – The Lasell University baseball team defeated GNAC opponent, Rivier University on Monday evening. The Lasers bested the Raiders 17-6 in just seven innings as the mercy rule came into effect. The win pushes Lasell to 13-7 overall and 2-1 in GNAC play, as Rivier falls to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in the GNAC.

The bats started off hot for both sides in the first inning as the Raiders jumped out to an early lead after a double and fielder's choice plated two runs. However, the Lasers responded quickly, after back-to-back walks to start the inning Scott Lyon came up with two on and one out and ripped a double down the left field line to score CJ Mills. The next batter, Ross Audet singled to the third baseman scoring Tim Callahan and tying it up, 2-2. Lasell wasn't done yet in the first though, Pierce Clare was next to hit and singled on a line drive over the shortstops head to score Lyon and give the Lasers a 3-2 lead. Bryan Baumann then extended that lead with a single of his own, down the left field line that plated Audet and extended the Laser lead to 4-2. Brad Edwards added to that in the next inning, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Mills.

Lasell really broke things open in the fourth as they loaded the bases and Lyon and Audet drew back-to-back walks to score two more runs. Clare was up again with runners in scoring position and smacked a double to left center, scoring Lyon and Edwards. After him, Baumann would collect his second RBI of the day with a single and Chris Bulk also singled to score Clare as the Lasers led 10-2 after four.

Rivier was able to scrape across a run in the fifth as a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luis Colon scored a run, but Lasell responded again with three more runs in the bottom half as Lyon shot a two-run single up the middle and Clare brought in a run on an error. The Raiders got another run in the sixth on an RBI single from Dylan Alberti, but yet again Lasell got it right back as Peter German launched a sacrifice fly to plate another run and give Lasell a 10-run lead.

Rivier started the seventh with a bang as Colon smashed a two-run home run to right center, bringing them to within eight, 14-6. Not too much surprise, the Lasers would get those back in the bottom half of the seventh as Callahan singled with the bases loaded, through the right side to score two runs and give Lasell a 17-6 victory.

Junior Adam Marsh (2-0) was on the hill for Lasell in this one as he collected the win, throwing five innings allowing just three runs on four hits while walking five and striking out five.

Every starter in the Lasell lineup got at least one hit in this contest, Callahan leading the way going three for four with two RBIs and scoring three runs himself. Lyon also went three for four with four RBIs, one of those hits being a double. Clare drove in four runs with his two hits, Baumann also added two hits and two RBIs. Chris Bulk singled twice and drove in a run, and Jared Whitby also added two singles. Audet and Edwards added a hit apiece, as did Mills who also scored four runs.

Up Next – The Lasers stay at home on Thursday night as they host another GNAC opponent in the Colby-Sawyer Chargers. First pitch is slated for 7:00 pm.
