BSB: Lasers Sweep Saint Joseph's; Clinch Two Seed

Standish, ME - The Lasell Lasers Baseball team wrapped up their regular season with a pair of wins of Saint Joseph's (Maine). They took game one 5-1 and game two 8-3. The Lasers are now 22-14 on the season and 14-4 in GNAC play. With the two wins they clinched the second seed in the playoffs. The Monks are now 18-21 and 9-9.

Game One

Timely hitting proved to be the key to the Lasers success in this game. After CJ Mills walked in the third, Tim Callahan doubled to put of them in scoring position. Mills would score on a passed ball, while Callahan scored when Connor Freitas homered to give the Lasers a 3-0 lead. The Lasers then added to their lead with two runs in the fourth. After a walk and a HBP, Callahan singled up the middle to score a run. Another run would score on an error. The Monks would get a run in the seventh, but that was it, as the Lasers pitching staff shut them down.

The Lasers had four hits in the game, with Tim Callahan having two of them The other two hits came off the bats of Connor Freitas and Jared Whitby. Adam Marsh started and got his seventh win of the season by going five shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out three. He was relieved by Darek Lallo who pitched two innings and allowed three hits and a run. He also struck out three.

Game Two

After a pair of singles in the second put guys on base, Ross Audet brought a run in on an RBI single. The Lasers then expanded on their lead in the third. After two walks and a HBP, Connor Freitas brought home a run with a fielder's choice. Matthew Bischof then had an RBI single to make the game 3-0. They then upped their lead to 5-0 in the fifth after an error and passed ball each scored a run. The Monks closed the gap in the sixth with three runs, but the Lasers responded in the seventh with three runs of their own. CJ Mills led the inning off with a homer, and after a single by Tim Callahan, Bischof homered himself, making the game 8-3.

With a chance to lock up the number two seed in the GNAC, the Lasers opted to send their ace Matthew Fletcher to the mound, rather than save him for a potential elimination game on Tuesday should they lose. It paid off as he went six innings, allowing five hits and three runs. He struck out four. He was relieved by Jason Giangrande, who pitched three innings for the save, allowing just a lone hit while striking out three. The Lasers had nine hits in the game, with Tim Callahan, Matthew Bischof, and Pierce Clare each recording two. Bischof knocked in half of the team's runs with four RBI.

The Lasers now have 22 wins on the season, the second most in a season in school history, one behind the 2019 team.

Up next - The Lasers earned a bye in the GNAC playoffs, and will host a team on Thursday, May 4th at 7pm.
