BB: Lasell drops non-conference game to Framingham; Motyka, Doris power Laser attack

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Lasell University baseball team suffered its first loss of the season against Framingham State University Saturday afternoon, 14-9, in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.

Framingham State belted four home runs, including a pair from junior Andrew Caulfield (Malden, Mass.), while Lasell hit two long balls, one each from junior Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) and sophomore Matt Motyka (Vernon, Conn.). With the outcome, both teams are now 1-1 on the season.

Motyka had a double and a home run with three runs batted in while Doris also had two hits and three RBI. Senior Joe Sullivan (Sandwich, Mass.) had two hits and an RBI for the Lasers, including a double, and junior Charlie Danaher (Guilford, Conn.) also had a pair of singles.

The Lasers got on the board in the top of the second on a three-run homer to right by Motyka, but the Rams answered with four in the bottom of the inning with four runs taking a 4-3 lead.  Johnston plated the first on a single to right, Herman stole home of the back end of a double steal and Higgins delivered a two-run bomb.

Lasell took the lead back in the top of the fourth on a two run single to right by Doris. The Rams tallied two in the bottom of the fifth retaking the lead for good on a two run homer by Caulfield.

The Rams tacked on eight runs in the next two innings to open up a 14-5 lead.  The Laser added four in the top of the ninth to reach the final margin.

The Rams used five arms in the game with senior Kyle Coolidge (Plymouth, Mass.) earning the victory after tossing two innings of relief allowing two earned runs on four hits.  Jonathan Cloutier (Falmouth, Mass.) and sophomore Teaghin Andre (Fairhaven, Mass.) each tossed scoreless innings of relief.

Senior Zach Handzel (Palmer, Mass.) took the loss for the Lasers going five and a third allowing seven earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Lasers travel to Trinity on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game, while the Rams are back in action on Monday when they travel to UMass Boston for a 3 p.m. game.
