Dean Snaps Baseball's Four-Game Winning Streak, 9-5

FRANKLIN, Mass. (4/20/17) -- The Lasell College baseball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end as a three-run ninth inning was not enough in a 9-5 loss to the Bulldogs of Dean College in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon at Longley Field.

The Lasers slip to 10-12 on the season with the loss, while the Bulldogs improve to 14-13-1.

Junior first baseman Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) went 3-for-4 and scored a run to lead Lasell's 13-hit attack, while graduate right fielder Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.) and sophomore second baseman David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) posted two hits apiece. In total, nine Lasers posted hits in the game and five different players scored runs.

The Bulldogs scored the game's first three runs in the second inning, but Lasell senior starter Frank Zammarelli (Burrillville, R.I.) settled down from there as he struck out four and scattered seven hits and one walk over five innings.

Dean scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh against freshman reliever Zach Handzel (Palmer, Mass.), while classmates Patrick Colvin (Lenoxdale, Mass.) and Mike Tacinelli (Seymour, Conn.) combined to pitch scoreless ball over the final 1.1 frames.

After Dean's three-run, four-hit second inning, Lasell matched zeroes until it moved within a 3-2 score as it posted single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Junior left fielder Jesse Tejero (West Haven, Conn.) hit a one-out double in the fifth and scored the Lasers' first run of the ballgame on Beckerman's single to right three batters later.

Lasell manufactured a run with three hits in the following frame as Mascolo singled and advanced a base each on sophomore third baseman Greg Camarda's (Massapequa, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt and Marsell's single to left before catcher Robert Cutone (Tewksbury, Mass.) posted a two-out base hit.

Dean got a run back in the sixth inning before sending ten batters to the plate in a four-run, four-hit seventh. The Lasers stranded two runners on base in Dean freshman Jason Bottone's (Derby, Conn.) eighth and final inning of work before they rallied in the ninth.

The Lasers tagged freshman Christian Ponce (Lowell, Mass.) for three, two-out runs in the final frame, of which two were unearned. Sophomore Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) hit a pinch-hit, two-run double to center field and scored as Camarda reached on an error.

Bottone earned his third win of the season for Dean, while sophomore left fielder Christopher Wood (Berkley, Mass.) went 4-for-5 with four RBI to lead the hosts' offense.

The Lasers return to conference action with doubleheaders on back-to-back days this coming weekend, first traveling to Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, April 22 at 12:00 p.m. The Bulldogs continue a 12-game homestand against Fitchburg State on Friday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m.
