Hurty Highlights Baseball All-Conference Selections as Player of the Year

NEWTON, Mass. (5/9/16) – Senior Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Baseball Player of the Year as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Hurty, who takes the honor as the first baseball player of the year at Lasell College, batted .348 on the year with 32 RBI's on 39 hits, capped by two homers and 10 doubles. With 23 runs on the year, Hurty combined for 67 career runs and 107 hits overall. Hurty produced a .469 OBP, which ties the all-time record at Lasell College.

Hurty backstopped the Lasers to the fourth round of the GNAC Tournament, the furthest Lasell has ever gone, with fundamental defense to earn GNAC First Team and All-Defensive Team honors. Hurty recorded 164 putouts and 24 assists.

Classmates Dan Gagnon (Pomfret, Conn.) and Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.) joined Hurty on the First Team, while junior Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) were placed on the Third Team.

Gagnon, the second baseman, cracked 36 hits, 25 RBI's, and pushed 23 runs across in 32 games played. Gagnon reached the 100 career hits milestone in round one of the GNAC playoffs to total 106 overall. As a middle infielder, Gagnon turned 21 double plays with 53 put outs and 99 assists. Beckerman capped the year with a team-leading .376 batting average in 125 at bats. The senior right fielder recorded 25 ribbies, 11 doubles, 47 total hits, and 19 runs. Beckerman also served as the Lasell representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Coscione represented the utility players on the Third Team as a pivotal shortstop and pitcher for the Lasers. Coscione recorded 40 hits, 10 doubles, three triples, and one home run with 24 RBI's and 31 runs scored in 38 games played. As a closing pitcher, Coscione produced a 1.64 ERA in 11.0 innings tossed with one win and four saves, setting the all-time and single-season saves mark at Lasell.

Sherron, the Third Team designated hitter, had a tremendous rookie season of 27 hits, ten doubles, and 15 runs in 84 at bats. The rookie capped his first season as a Laser with a 5-4 walk-off single in the third round of the GNAC Tournament.
