Baseball Tops Emerson 4-1

BROCKTON, Mass. (3/31/16) – The Lasell baseball team downed Emerson College, 4-1, Thursday evening at the Lions' new home field of Campanelli Stadium. The Lasers bump back to .500 at 8-8 this season, while the Lions dip to 3-13.

Freshman Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) drove in two runs, while senior Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) and junior Matt Haskell (Wallingford, Conn.) recorded a ribbie in the winning effort. Sophomore Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) and Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) added a double and a triple on the evening, respectively.

Three Lions hit into doubles in the outing via senior Steven Cameron (Lansdale, Pa.), junior Mitch Moormann (Hollywood, Fla.) and sophomore Pablo Feldmen (Mill Valley, Calif.). Moormann batted 2-for-4 at the plate to attest for the Lions' seven hits.

The Lasers got things going in their second at bats, as an error, a walk, and single to short from senior Tyler Flaherty (Portland, Maine) juiced the bases for Michalek. On a deep single, Michalek drove in a speedy Hurty and Flaherty to lead the Lions 2-0. Coscione's triple in the top of the third again put the Lasers in scoring position, as Hurty struck a sac fly to center field, bringing in the run from third for the 3-0 bump.

Senior Gary Trottier (Methuen, Mass.) kept the Lions at bay until the bottom of the fourth, allowing just two hits, until Feldman cracked a double and later scored on an error by Lasell's first baseman.

After Flaherty's second hit of the evening, Haskell cracked a single to right field where both runners used a bobble from the right fielder to advance an extra base. Flaherty crossed home on the play to seal the 4-1 victory for the Lasers.

Trottier (1-2) earned the win on the hill in 6.0 innings tossed with two strikeouts, five hits, and one earned run, while Coscione closed the game to record his third save of the season. Jack Caportorto pitched a full game for the Lions, giving up six hits, four walks, and four runs.

The Lasers will open their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) schedule on Saturday, April 2 with a home doubleheader against top contender Suffolk University at 3:00 p.m.
