Baseball Drops Two to Edgewood College

FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/14/16) – The Lasell baseball team dropped a pair of games to the Eagles of Edgewood College Monday afternoon at the Terry Park Stadium. The outing puts the Lasers at 2-3 this season, while the Eagles earned their first two wins of the year at 2-1.

Game One – Edgewood: 9 Lasell: 7

Despite the setback, the Lasers strung together eight hits highlighted by a straight shot to left field from sophomore Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.). Mascolo plated two runs in the afternoon, joining senior Tyler Flaherty (Portland, Maine) with a pair of RBI's of his own via a deep double to center field.

Heavy balanced hitting lifted the Eagles to the victory, as Nick Lehner (Muskego, Wis.) paved the way with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate to go along with a homer to right field. Andrew Lauritzen (Redding, Calif.), Casey Seelow (Madison, Wis.), and Nik Visone (Las Vegas, Nev.) shared a double apiece in the win, while Jonathan Roehler (Windsor, Ont.) registered a triple to join Lehner for two ribbies.

After a 1-2-3 performance at the mound from senior Frank Zammarelli (Burrilville, R.I.) the Lasers were quickly put into scoring position off a sac fly from senior Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.), advancing junior Brandon Valentin (Meriden, Conn.) on the play. Flaherty's deep double to center scored Valentin and junior Matt Haskell (Wallingford, Conn.), who was then driven in from a single by senior Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.).

The Eagles knocked down two runs in the next inning, as Seelow's double plated two runners who worked a walk to start the inning. Looking to add an insurance run, freshman Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) worked his way to third base after reaching on a fielder's choice, but Eagles' pitcher Steve Gavin (Reedsburg, Wis.) was able to get out of the jam with a final strikeout, one of his five total.

A sac fly from Tim Nunn (Napa, Calif.) drove in Lehner for the go-ahead run, where the Eagles took the game for their own and never trailed. Mascolo gave the Lasers a glimpse of hope during their last at bats with a rocket to left field, trailing 9-7, but Edgewood defense assured the opposition the final victory.

Game Two – Edgewood: 10 Lasell: 2

The first-years shined in game two despite the final outcome, as both Brett Sheron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and classmate Greg Camarda (Massapequa, N.Y.) swung into their first collegiate doubles. Valentin and freshman Andre Marchessault (Chesire, Conn.) drove in the only two runs for Lasell, with Marchessault also recording a sac fly.

Along with another heavy bat showing, Eagles' senior pitcher Andy Swanson (Rockford, Ill.) allowed just six hits in a complete game performance. Garrett Boqucki (Twin Lakes, Wis.) swung into his first career homer on a straight shot to left center, while Danny Appino (Rockford, Ill), Paul Cappetta (Downers Grove, Ill.), Jacob Yellovich (Columbia Heights, Minn.) Roehler, Lenher each drove in runs for Edgewood.

The Eagles led from start to finish, as Bogucki's 2RBI homer gave a 3-0 advantage in the first at bats. Edgewood pushed the lead to 7-0 after a tough defensive inning by the Lasers, allowing three hits and four runs with two errors. Three final runs scored in the fourth sealed the 10-2 victory for the opposition, as the Lasers tallied two last-chance runs from Sherron and freshman Chris Maringo (Framingville, N.Y.).

Lasell will play one nine-inning game tomorrow vs. Massachusetts foe Nichols College, with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
