Baseball Falls to Colby 4-2 in Non-Conference Tilt

WALTHAM, Mass. (5/2/14) – The Lasell College baseball team dropped a 4-2 non-conference decision to visiting Colby College on Friday evening. The Lasers slipped to 18-13 on the season while Colby improved to 16-13 overall.

Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.) had a walk and a pair of doubles for Lasell while scoring a run, Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) singled twice and drove in a run and Chris Pittman (Brockton,Mass.) added a double. Ryan Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) started for Lasell, taking the loss to fall to 4-3 while allowing four runs on ten hits in six innings of work and Greg Sherman (Marshfield, Mass.) tossed three hitless innings of relief for the Lasers.

Jason Buco (Metheun, Mass.) hit a three-run homerun and added a single for Colby and Ryder Arsenault (New Hampton, N.H.) singled, doubled and scored a run for the Mules. Scott Goldberg (Valley Stream, N.Y.) improved to 4-2 on the season on the mound, scattering six hits and two walks in six innings of work while striking out five. Lucas Geoghegan (Boston, Mass.) allowed a hit and a walk in one and a third innings of relief and Greg Ladd (Danvers, Mass.) notched his second save of the season by striking out one in one and two third innings of hitless relief.

Colin Cummings (Asburn, Va.) led off the top of the first inning with a single and Ryder Arsenault's double gave Colby runners on second and third with nobody out. Jason Buco then followed with a three-run blast to left centerfield, staking Colby to a 3-0 lead. Kevin Galvin (Portsmouth, R.I.) singled with one out and Danny Csaplar (Winchester, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to give the Mules runners on first and second, but Bowen escaped the jam by inducing a fly-out and ground out to end the threat.

Lasell trimmed the Mules lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Billy Uberti led off with a double, advancing to third on a wild pitch and coming in to score on an RBI single by Coscione. The Lasers tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Bobby Ellard (Medfield, Mass.) tripled to right field and came in to score on Matt Sammarco's (New Canaan, Conn.) run scoring groundout to make it 3-2.

A two-out single by Nils Ellis (Worcester, Mass.) drove in Tim Corey (Framingham, Mass.) for Colby, pushing their cushion to 4-2 heading into the home half of the sixth inning. Uberti doubled for the second time in the game with one out in the bottom of the sixth, and Hector Coscione singled to give Lasell runners on the corners with one out. Coscione stole second, giving the Lasers two runners in scoring position and following a strikeout, Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) worked a walk to give Lasell the bases loaded with two out. Goldberg battled through trouble, escaping without any damage by recording an inning-ending strikeout to preserve the visitors 4-2 lead.

Billy Uberti walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning and Chris Pittman reached on an error with one out to give Lasell runners on first and second and chasing Geoghegan from the game. Ladd came on and quashed the Lasers rally getting a foul-out and a groundout to end the inning. Ladd then set the Lasers down in order in the ninth inning to preserve the victory and earn the save.

Colby will travel to Amherst for a doubleheader with the Lord Jeffs with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday May 3rd while Lasell will wait to see if they receive a bid to the ECAC New England regional Championships.
