Baseball Sweeps Polytechnic to Open Spring Trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/15/14) – The Lasell College baseball team swept NYU-Polytechnic, 6-2 and 16-1, to open their southern trip and improve to 2-2 on the season.

Game One – Lasell 6 – Polytechnic 2

Dan Gagnon doubled, scored a run and drove in a run for Lasell, Kevin Post had a single and a walk while scoring twice and Hector Coscione singled and knocked in a pair of runs. Ryan Bowen threw a complete game to earn the victory, holding Polytechnic to four hits in seven innings, allowing two runs, one eraned with four strikeouts.

Polytechnic opened up a 2-0 lead through two innings, using an RBI single to score in the top of the first and an RBI groundout to plate their run in the top of the second. Lasell got a run back in the fourth home half of the fourth when Kevin Post singled and stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball. Wes Hurty drove Post in with a sacrifice fly to right field, cutting the lead to 2-1.

Gagnon doubled to lead off the Lasell half of the fifth inning, coming in to score on a single by Bobby Ellard after Rob Madden reached on an error. Post drew a two-out walk to load the bases after a fly-out by Billy Uberti and Coscione singled scoring Madden and Ellard and sending Post to third. A well-executed double steal saw Coscione advance to second while Post scored on the play to give the Lasers a 5-2 lead. Lasell tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to make it 6-2 and Bowen set Polytechnic down in order for the third straight inning to wrap up the complete game victory.

Game Two – Lasell 16 – Polytechnic 1

Dan Gagnon had a single and two doubles in four at-bats to score once and drive in four runs to lead Lasell. Tyler Flaherty singled, doubled, and walked in four plate appearances while scoring three runs and driving in one for the Lasers and Evan Mozingo scored twice and knocked in two runs as well. Kevin Post threw four innings of one-hit, one-run baseball while striking out five to get the win on the mound and Chris Pittman, Aaron Catarina and Greg Sherman each tossed an inning of hitless relief in the victory.

Gagnon led off with a double in the top of the first then Rob Madden walked and Bobby Ellard reached on an error to load the bases for Lasell with nobody out. Uberti grounded out but a Post single plated a run and a Coscione walk forced in another to give Lasell a 2-0 lead. Matt Sammarco singled in a run keeping the bases still loaded and Evan Mozingo was hit by a pitch to force in another run to put Laseel in front 4-0. An error on a Flaherty single scored another run and brought the top of the order up again for Lasell with one out and the bases loaded.  

Gagnon singled, driving in two and Lasell scored their eighth run of the inning on an RBI groundout by Ellard, staking Post to an 8-0 lead before he took the mound. Polytechnic put a pair of runners on second and third with one out, courtesy of a walk, hit by pitch and a passed ball and they scored their lone run of the game on an RBI groundout.

Lasell added four runs in the top of the fourth when Uberti led off with a walk, scoring on a Coscione triple with one out. Mozingo added an RBI triple of his own with two outs and Tyler Flaherty followed with a walk putting a pair of runners on for Gagnon to knock in with his second double of the ballgame to make it 12-1 in favor of Lasell. The Lasers tacked on another run in the top of the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh to make it a 16-1 final margin.
