Buccaneers Grab Pair of Non-Conference Baseball Games from Lasell

Waltham, Mass. (4/21/13) – The Lasell College baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy, falling 5-1in game one and 8-0 in the second game of the afternoon. Lasell slid to 12-21 on the season while Massachusetts Maritime climbed to 9-16 for the 2013 campaign.

Game One:

Bobby Ellard (Medfield, Mass.) rapped out a pair of singles in three at-bats for Lasell, Matt Sammarco (New Canaan, Conn.) scored the lone run of the game for the Lasers and Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) singled once and collected the lone run batted in for Lasell. Kevin Post (Cromwell, Conn.) threw six innings for the Lasers, allowing two runs on five hits while fanning three batters while taking the loss. Vinny Romano (Yonkers, N.Y.) pitched an inning of relief for Lasell, yielding three runs, two earned, on three hits while walking one.

Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) was 3 for 4 at the dish for the Buccaneers, with a double and three runs batted in. Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) added a single and a double in two at-bats with one walk and three runs scored for MMA. Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) claimed the victory on the hill for Massachusetts Maritime, tossing five innings of three-hit baseball, allowing one run and recording three strikeouts. Keith Sanchez (Monroe Township, N.J.) threw two innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and recording one strikeout to collect the save.

Lee was hit by a pitch to open the game in the top of the first for MMA, coming around to score on a double by Rosano and giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Buccaneers added another run in the top of the fifth inning, which Lee started with a single. Lee advanced to second on a ground out, and stole third after a fly-out to put himself 90 feet from home with two away. Rosano singled Lee home to put MMA in front 2-0 heading to the home half of the fifth inning.

Lasell got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Sammarco opened the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Hurty's single to cut their deficit to 2-1. Lasell stranded a pair of runners in the sixth inning, sending the game into the final frame with MMA holding a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh a leadoff double by Lee followed by consecutive singles from Brendan O'Kane (Pocasset, Mass.) and Rosano scored Lee to MMA in front 3-1. Rosano was picked off first for the second out of the inning, but O'Kane came in to score while Rosano was caught in the run-down. An error on a Tyler Genereaux (Duxbury, Mass.) grounder and a walk to Matt King (Scituate, Mass.) gave the visitors runners on first and second with two outs. Genereaux stole third to put runners on the corners, and when King was caught off of first base he was tagged out for the third out of the inning but not before Genereaux scored to give MMA a 5-1 advantage.

Lasell was unable to mount a seventh inning rally, and dropped the first game of the double dip 5-1.

Game Two:  

Lasell fell 8-0 in the second game of the doubleheader as the Buccaneers used stout pitching and timely hitting to complete the sweep.

Bobby Ellard, Dustin Brown (Falmouth, Mass.) and Jacob Salkovitz (Brockton, Mass.) each singled for Lasell in the contest as the Lasers were limited to three hits in the contest. Mike Rodriguez (Brockton, Mass.) took the loss for Lasell, allowing one run on three hits in an inning of work. Brendan Jordan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) relieved Rodriguez, throwing three innings and holding MMA to two runs, one earned on two hits and three walks. David Long (Brookfield, Conn.) recorded a scoreless inning of relief, giving up a hit and striking out one, and Aaron Catarina North Smithfield, R.I.) struck out one in an inning and two thirds of hitless relief.

Bob Lee notched a single and a double in three at-bats while scoring a pair of runs and knocking in two. Bobby Rosano singled and picked up three runs driven in, and Tyler Genereaux added a single, double and a run scored in the victory. Keith Sanchez earned the win for MMA, throwing four scoreless innings of two hit baseball and striking out three. Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) tossed three innings of one-hit baseball without allowing a run, getting credit for the save.

Lee got the Buccaneers on the board in the top of the first, walking to open the game, stealing second, reaching third on a passed ball and scoring on an RBI groundout by Rosano to take a 1-0 lead.

Lasell threatened in the bottom of the second inning when Bobby Stachura (Cheshire, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to open inning and Dustin Brown singled to put runners on first and second with nobody out. A groundout advanced the runners to second and third with one away, but Sanchez recorded back-to-back strikeouts to squash the threat.

The Buccaneers scored twice in the top of the fourth inning, capitalizing on a pair of walks and a pair of errors to push two runs across and go in front 3-0.

The visitors put the game away with five runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning on their way to an 8-0 victory.
