Baseball Suffers Extra Inning Defeat to Nichols

Waltham, Mass. (4/18/13) – The Lasell College baseball team feel victim to a ninth inning rally by the visiting Bison of Nichols College resulting in the hosts dropping a 6-4 decision in 10 innings. Lasell slid to 11-18 on the season while Nichols improved to 5-23 overall.

Dustin Brown (Falmouth, Mass.) singled twice for Lasell, scoring once and driving in a run. Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.) and Jake Salkovitz (Brockton, Mass.) each had RBI doubles in the contest for the Lasers. David Long (Brookfield, Conn.) started on the mound for Lasell, going three innings while allowing one run on one hit before giving way to Greg Sherman (Marshfield, Mass.). Sherman pitched four innings for Lasell, yielding one run on a pair of hits with two strikeouts. Vinny Romano (Yonkers, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing two runs in the tenth inning on one hit and three walks.

Cody Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) was 3 for 4 at the plate for Nichols with a double, two runs scored and one driven in. Joseph Nicolace (Cransont, R.I.) was 1 for 2 with a double for the Bison, and John Micciche (Holbrook, Mass.) knocked in a pair of runs for the visitors. James Curto (Braintree, Mass.) started and threw four and a third innings for Nichols, allowing three runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five. Chris Johnson (Mansfield, Mass.) earned the victory, tossing five and two third innings of relief and holding Lasell to one unearned run on one hit and one walk while fanning three.

A Jankins single in the top of the first inning drove in Brady Boisvert (Plainfield, N.H.) to give Nichols a 1-0 lead. Lasell responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning when Jake Salkovitz (Brockton, Mass.) plated Rob Madden (Hingham, Mass.) with an RBI double, coming in to score on a single by Dustin Brown to take a 2-1 lead.

A Shayne McNally (Auburn, Mass.) sacrifice fly scored Jankins in the top of the fourth inning for Nichols to tie the game at 2-2. Lasell went back on top 3-2 in the home half of the fifth inning when a walk to Lasell's Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) forced in a run.

An RBI double by Uberti scored Brown for Lasell in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving Lasell a 4-2 lead.

Jankins opened the top of the ninth inning with a double for Nichols, and advanced to third on a single by Benjamin Harrow (North Reading, Mass.). Jankins came in to score on a passed ball, and Harrow moved up to second base. A wild pitch allowed Harrow to move to third base with nobody out, before the next two Bison were retired with Harrow still on third. A wild pitch allowed Harrow to score tying the game, before Lasell's Gary Trotteir (Rehobeth, Mass.) recorded a strikeout for the third out of the inning.

Lasell was unable to break the 4-4 deadlock in the bottom of the ninth inning, send the game into extra innings.

After a pair of runners reached on walks Micciche singled through the middle to plate a pair of runs giving Nichols a 6-4 lead. Lasell got out of the inning without any further damage, but were unable to score in the bottom of the tenth inning, resulting in the non-conference loss for the Lasers.

Lasell will be back in action on Saturday April 20th when they host GNAC foe Emerson in a doubleheader at 6:00 p.m. Nichols will return to the diamond on Friday April 19th when they visit CCC member Endicott College for a twinbill beginning at 2:00 p.m.
