Big Inning Helps Otterbein Past Lasell in Baseball

Fort Myers, Fla. (3/23/13) – The Lasell College baseball team dropped the final game of their spring trip to Florida, 12-3 against Otterbein University. Lasell finished their season opening southern swing 3-7 overall, while Otterbein stands at 12-1 on the 2013 campaign.

Eight different players registered hits for Lasell, and Bobby Stachura and Dustin Brown each drove in runs for the Lasers. Rob Madden took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs, only one earned, on four hits and three walks in four and two third innings. Brendan Jordan threw three innings in relief, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks while fanning three. Vinny Romano also recorded a strikeout while allowing one hit and no runs in one inning pitched.

Billy Harkenrider had a big day at the plate for the Quakers, finishing with a double, three singles, three runs scored and two driven in. Thomas Linder was two for four at the plate, scoring three times and driving in a pair and Sean Kettering finished with three runs batted in for Otterbein. Taylor Ellis got the win on the hill for Otterbein, allowing two unearned runs and scattering six hits while striking out four in seven innings of work.

Lasell got on the board in the bottom of the third when Billy Uberti reached second on an error, and scored on a Dustin Brown single. Brown advanced to second when Otterbein attempted to throw Uberti out at the plate. Stachura drove Brown in with his single to left field, putting Lasell on top 2-0.

The Quakers evened the score in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Kettering and a sacrifice fly, making it a 2-2 ballgame. Otterbein then went ahead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth, to go up 5-2. The Quakers exploded for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach and build a 12-2 lead.

Lasell was able to get a run back in the bottom of the eighth when AJ McKenzie singled and scored on a groundout to cut the deficit to 12-3, but the margin was too much to overcome as the Lasers fell 12-3.
