Baseball Ties in the 6th but Ultimately Falls in Battle with Vikings

SALEM, MA- Lasell College Baseball tied the game in the sixth inning with five runs before ultimately falling to the Salem State College Vikings, 12-8, in a non-conference battle on Thursday night.

Salem State took a two run lead in the top of the first inning after Troy Ingemi hit a homerun in the two spot of the lineup.  Lasell replied with one run later in the inning when Josh Sullivan (Rockland, MA) walked, stole second, and then was plated by Herb Chappell (Salem, CT) on a base hit.

The Vikings put up two more runs each in the third and sixth inning before the Lasers knocked out a five-run bottom of the sixth.  Lasell capitalized on seven hits and two Viking errors to tie the score at six-all.  Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA), Chappell, Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA), and Jake Salkovitz (Brockton, MA) each produced RBI-singles in the inning.  Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT), Sullivan, and Angelo Colucci (Stoneham, MA) also launched base hits and runs in the frame.

The teams remained in a deadlock through the seventh inning, at which point Salem State used a four-hit, six-run inning in the eighth to seal the victory. Lasell scored just once in the bottom of the inning when Mike Mahoney rounded the bases on a Salkoviltz hit. The game was called due to darkness in the eighth.

Starter Mike Rodriguez (Brockton, MA) pitched six innings allowing five earned runs and five hits while striking out three Viking batters.  Reliever Matt Pitts (Stoneham, MA) suffered the loss in one and two thirds innings.

Chappell highlighted the Lasers going four-for-four at the plate, with one double, two RBI, and one run.  Chappell also made eight outs for Lasell at first base.  Stachura and Salkovitz had two knocks each, Salkovitz adding two RBI.

The Lasers will return home for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference twinbill with Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, April 3rd, beginning at noon.
