Lasell Athletics announces Annual Awards

NEWTON, Mass. – Lasell College Athletics honored its 56 senior student-athletes for their success and accomplishments at the Annual Awards Banquet Monday night at the Boston-Newton Crowne Plaza.

Director of Athletics Kristy Walter presented annual Athlete of the Year and Torchbearer Awards to five deserving individuals, and Faculty Athletic Representative Janice Savitz presented the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Senior men's lacrosse player Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass./Hingham), junior men's basketball player Stefan Masciarelli (Northbridge, Mass./St. John's) and senior field hockey player Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) were named this year's Athletes of the Year, and senior men's lacrosse player David Sheehan (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) and senior women's soccer player Carly Zdanek (Newton, N.J.) were presented with the Torchbearer Awards.

The Scholar-Athlete Awards were presented to senior track & field runner Ben Lane (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) and senior women's soccer player Emma Papile (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) for their outstanding achievements in the classroom.

Madden is a four-time selection to the All-GNAC Men's Lacrosse Team, including being a First Team selection the past three seasons, and is this year's GNAC Offensive Player of the Year. He led the team and ranked second in the conference with a school-record 48 goals and 70 points. This year, he became the all-time leading goal scorer with 163 career goals and he is the second player in program history to record more than 200 career points. He was instrumental in helping the Lasers to an undefeated GNAC regular season title this spring and a program-best 16-2 overall record, including 15 straight victories.

Masciarelli was a First-Team selection on the All-GNAC Men's Basketball Team who led conference in scoring, averaging a school-record 24.6 points/game, and topped the conference with a school-record 92.6 free throw percentage. He also ranked third in the nation in Division III in FT% and 11th in scoring, and his 639 points scored and game-high of 45 points are both second all-time for the Lasers. In addition, he ranked in the top 10 nationally in field goals made and attempted. This year, he also went over the 1,000 career points mark, becoming the 15th player in program history to reach this milestone.

Flannery is a four-time All-GNAC Field Hockey Selection, being named Rookie of the Year in 2015, a Second Team selection in 2016 and First Team the past two years. She led the GNAC this year in scoring with 21 goals and 51 points, both of which are all-time records for Lasell. She ranked 26th nationally in goals/game, and 21st in points/game. Her 21 goals this year broke the school record of 20 set in 2008 and she leaves Lasell as the all-time leading scorer with 66 goals, 45 assist and 177 points.

The Torchbearer Awards are presented to student-athletes in their final season of eligibility who have excelled on the playing field and in the classroom, while making a positive impact on the Lasell Community. The recipients of this award are individuals who exemplify leadership, team spirit, ability and character.

Zdanek was a three-time First Team All-GNAC Women's Soccer selection, a two-time All-New England honoree and a Third Team All-American in 2017. For the second straight year, she led the scoring for the Lasers finishing with 10 goals, five assists and 25 points. She completed her career with 44 goals, 20 assists and 108 points in 82 games, ranking fourth in program history in goals and points and tied for third in assists. In her four- year career, she helped the team to an overall record of 58-8-17, and a GNAC mark of 42-4 including three Championships. Off the field, she has participated in Relay for Life all four years year; she is the recipient of the Lasell College Founder's Scholarship and a dean's list/magna cum laude student majoring in Fashion and Retail Merchandising.

Sheehan started every single Lasell men's lacrosse game the past four years. He is two-year captain and the leader of the Lasell Defense, which is statistically ranked #6 in division III. He was named this year's GNAC Defensive Player of the Year, earning his third All-GNAC selection and second straight First Team nod. He led the GNAC and ranked 29th nationally with 44 caused turnovers, and has the all-time single season and career records for caused turnovers at Lasell. His 165 career caused turnovers ranks in the top 10 in the NCAA Division III career record book. He helped lead the team to three regular season GNAC Titles, two GNAC championship appearances and one GNAC Title. Off the field, he has spearheaded numerous exercises around Domestic and Sexual violence training, not only for his team, but for the Lasell Community. He was also recently selected as a finalist for the One Love Foundation Unsung Hero award. He is a three-time member of the Dean's list and he will graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice.

Lane, a Sports Management major with a Minor in Law and Business, is a four-year veteran and two-year team captain of the track teams. He owns the school records in the 60 meter and 200 meter dash in the indoor season, and the 100 and 200 meter dash in the outdoor season, as well as several relays. He won consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference championships in the 100 and 200 meters, and he competed in the New England Division 3 championships in both events this past weekend for the second time in his career. Ben has been involved in several community service projects, most notably with the Newton Boys and Girls Club, and served as an Admissions Representative here at Lasell.

Papile, a Hospitality Management major with a Minor in Business, was a two-year starter for the Laser women's soccer team, starting 40 of her 60 career games and helping the team to four straight GNAC Championship games and three GNAC titles. She is a member of the Eta Sigma Delta Hospitality Management Honor Society, and a member of the Lasell Honors Program. She has participated in the Relay for Life charity since 2015, and served as Vice President of the National Association of Catering Events organization.
