Newton, MA - The Lasell College women's and men's basketball teams, in conjunction with the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, will Play 4Kay this weekend when they host Albertus Magnus. The event will be used to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, and also to promote cancer awareness.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially founded on December 3, 2007, from the vision of the organization's namesake Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach. Before her death, Yow worked with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and The V Foundation to establish the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Its goal is to find an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. The women's teams from Lasell College and Albertus Magnus College will be wearing pink shirts as they warm-up for their 1pm tipoff, in an effort to raise awareness and encourage people to get involved. The men's game vs. Albertus Magnus will follow at approximately 3pm and all proceeds from the day will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
All across the GNAC schools will be hosting Play 4Kay events throughout the week, and the Lasers women's basketball team will be participating in another event on Saturday February 18th when they travel to Norwich University.
Lasell women's basketball coach Carla Flaherty thinks it will be a great experience for her team.
"It's such a great cause and the WBCA and Kay Yow Cancer Fund have done an amazing job growing the event nationally. The Play 4Kay events are happening at all levels of basketball throughout the country and I'm glad to see everyone getting involved. Our student-athletes benefit from being a part of something bigger than themselves and our team, but also from seeing what has come from Coach Yow having a vision for change and putting it in motion."
