SB: Lasers End Regular Season With Rain Shortened Tie

Newton, MA - The Lasell Lasers played their last regular season game of the year against the Wentworth Leopards, but their biggest opponent proved to be Mother Nature, as the game ended in a 4-4 tie after a torrential downpour covered the field in water in the seventh. The Lasers are now 24-14-1 while the Leopards are 24-8-1. Prior to the game the Lasers honored their three seniors, Rebecca Smith, Matara Tamzarian, and Angelena Piers.

The Leopards scored first on an error in the first. But the Lasers bounced back with a pair in the bottom half of the inning. Both Abigail Fortin and Brianna Gendreau singled, and Fortin scored on a wild pitch to tie things up. The Lasers then took the lead on a Katie Hopkins RBI triple. That is how things would stay until both teams put up a crooked number in the fifth, starting with the Leopards. Wentworth scored three runs on four hits and two errors. Trailing 4-2, the Lasers responded with two runs of their own to tie things. Singles by Abigail Fortin, Ally Kirck, and Brianna Gendreau loaded the bases. Fortin would score on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Bland, and Kirck scored on a fielder's choice. Neither team scored in the sixth, and after shutting the Leopards down in the seventh, the Lasers threatened in the bottom half of the inning. Alyssa DeMarest walked to lead off the inning, and then stole second to give the Lasers a runner in scoring position with no outs. But what had been a drizzle, turned into a downpour, halting the game. The field became unplayable, resulting in a tie.

The Lasers had eight hits, with the heavy lifting coming from Abigail Fortin, Brianna Gendreau, and Katie Hopkins, as they each had two hits. The other hits came from Ally Kirck and Meghan Theall. Theall also started in the circle, and went five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three of which were earned. She stuck out four. Abigail Fortin would relieve her and pitch two shutout innings while allowing a lone hit.

Up next - The Lasers will wait to see who they play in the GNAC playoffs, as they take the weekend off. They will host either Regis or USJ on Tuesday, May 2nd at 3pm.
