SB: Lasers End Conference Play With Losses to JWU

Providence, RI, - The Lasell Lasers Softball team took on the JWU Wildcats on Saturday with the top spot in the GNAC on the line. The Wildcats got the better of the Lasers, as Lasell fell in both games by scores of 7-4 and 9-0. The Lasers are now 24-12 on the season and 8-4 in GNAC play, while JWU is 26-10 and 11-1. The Lasers will be either the second or third seed in the GNAC tournament, depending on the results of Albertus Magnus' doubleheader with Regis next week.

Game One

After a scoreless first inning, the Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in the second on a homer. They extended their lead to four with a run in the third. After a couple more scoreless innings, the Lasers cut the lead in half in the sixth when Eryn Sheeley hit a two-run homer. But the Wildcats one upped the Lasers in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs. Lasell wouldn't go down without a fight though, as they scored two runs on a Katie Hopkins single in the seventh, and sent the tying run to the plate. But Mackenzie Still would fly out to center field to end the game.

The Lasers had 13 hits in the game, led by Mackenzie Still's three. Brianna Gendreau, Katie Hopkins, and Meghan Theall each had two. Abigail Fortin pitched the whole game for the Lasers, going six innings and allowing 11 hits and seven runs, four of which were earned. She struck out five.

Game Two

The Lasers were never able to get their offense going in this game, and they fell behind early. The Wildcats scored once in the first, and again in the third to go up 2-0. They then scored in bunches, scoring seven runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Lasers had two hits in the game, singles from Ally Kirck and Brianna Gendreau. Gendreau's hit was the 56th of the season, tying the Lasell school record for hits in a season. Mackenzie Still was the other Lasell baserunner, reaching on a walk. Eryn Sheeley started in the circle for the Lasers, pitching five innings, allowing eight hits and five runs. She struck out five. After pitching the first game, Abigail Fortin came in and pitched the final 0.2 innings of this game, allowing five hits and four runs.

Up Next - The Lasers will stay busy with a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, when they head to Framingham State.
