SB: Sheeley Sets Career Record For Strikeouts as Lasers Sweep Monks

Newton, MA - The Lasell Lasers softball team swept the Saint Joseph's (ME) Monks on Saturday, winning game one 4-2 and game two 6-0. The Lasers are now 16-8 while the Monks are 10-12.

Game One

Lasell struck first when they scored two runs in the second on an Angelena Piers double. After the Monks tied things up in the third, the Lasers retook the lead with a pair of RBI singles from Emily Mestas and Ally Kirck, giving them a 4-2 lead that would be the final score.

The Lasers collected five hits, with Emily Mestas, Ally Kirck, Brianna Gendreau, and Mackenzie Still each recording a single, and Angelena Piers hitting a double. But the story of the game, and the day, was Eryn Sheeley. Sheeley passed Eileen Bergin with a strikeout in the fifth for most career strikeouts, breaking the school record of 285, that Bergin set in 2016. Sheeley struck out seven over seven innings, and allowed just five hits and two unearned runs. She picked up her 10th win of the season.

Game Two

The Lasers scored one run in both the first and second innings, and held that 2-0 lead until the fifth. It was then that their bats exploded for four runs. Ally Kirck, Eryn Sheeley, and Katie Hopkins each had RBI singles, with the fourth run scoring on an error. This gave the Lasers a 6-0 lead and ultimately the win by the same score.

The Lasers collected nine hits in the game, with Ally Kirck and Katie Hopkins each having two. Abigail Fortin collected a hit, but made her mark as the starting pitcher for the Lasers, going all seven innings. She allowed just six hits, and no runs for a shutout. She struck out three and walked just one.

Up Next - The Lasers will next play a non-conference doubleheader against Salem State on Tuesday April 11th.
