SB: Lasers Remain Perfect in Conference Play

Franklin, MA - The Lasell Lasers Softball team continued their excellent play in GNAC play, defeating the Dean Bulldogs in both games of their doubleheader on Thursday by scores of 7-0 and 6-2. The Lasers are now 14-8 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Bulldogs are now 2-17-1 and 0-4.

Game One

After neither team scored in the first two innings, the Lasers bats exploded in the third, scoring four runs. Emily Mestas started the inning off with a single, and then scored when Ally Kirck hit an RBI single. She then scored on a throwing error, giving her a little league home run. After a pair of outs, the Lasers started a two out rally with a pair of singles by Mackenzie Still and Katie Hopkins. Still would score on a Grace Stephenson RBI double, while Hopkins scored on an Angelena Piers RBI single. The Lasers added another run in the fourth on an Eryn Sheeley RBI double. Ally Kirck would have RBI singles in the sixth and seventh to stretch the Laser lead to the eventual final score of 7-0.

The Lasers recorded 15 hits in the game, with Emily Mestas and Ally Kirck each having three. Eryn Sheeley, Katie Hopkins, and Angelena Piers each had two. On the mound Eryn Sheeley dominated, as she went all seven innings, allowing just three hits while striking out 11 batters in the shutout. She now has 281 career strike outs, and will look to break the school record of 285 in her next outing. She moves to 9-3 on the season. Her 111 strikeouts on the season are more than double anyone else in the GNAC, and rank as the second most in a season in Lasell history, trailing only Amanda Corey's 139 in 2006.

Game Two

While the Lasers ran away with game one, game two was a pitchers duel through seven innings, with each team just scoring once. Dean scored on a single in the fourth, while the Lasers scored on an error in the sixth. This game would head to extras, where the Lasers bats came alive. After a sacrifice bunt to move the placed runner to third, the Lasers took the lead on an error. They then scored another run on another error. Abigail Fortin would then have an RBI single, followed by another run scoring on a fielder's choice by Alyssa Bland. The inning was wrapped up after a Meghan Theall RBI double that put the Lasers up 6-1. The Bulldogs got one run in the bottom half of the inning, but Lasell took the 6-2 victory.

Over the eight innings, the Lasers recorded just six hits, with Brianna Gendreau having two of them. The others came from Ally Kirck, Katie Hopkins, Abigail Fortin, and Meghan Theall. In the circle was Fortin, and she pitched all eight innings, allowing just five hits and two runs, one of which was earned. She struck out eight and walked none while picking up her fifth win of the season.
