SB: Lasers Lose Two One Run Games to Simmons

Brighton, MA - The Lasell Lasers Softball team fell in both games of their doubleheader at Simmons College on Sunday, falling 4-3 and 6-5. The Lasers are now 11-7 while the Sharks are 10-10.

Game One

After Emily Mestas reached on an error to lead off the game, Brianna Gendreau doubled to left field to drive in a run. The next batter, Eryn Sheeley, then doubled in Gendreau to give the Lasers a quick 2-0 lead. Despite not having a hit in the bottom half of the inning, the Sharks cut the lead in half, scoring a run with a walk, wild pitch and pair of ground outs. After neither team scored over the next two innings, the Sharks tied the game up in the fourth by once again manufacturing a run with minimal offense, scoring this time after a pair of walks and a lone single. The Sharks then took the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth. The Lasers did not go down without a fight though, as they had back to back singles to lead off the seventh. But after scoring a run on an Eryn Sheeley ground out, the Lasers were unable to push any more runs across, and fell 4-3.

Half of the Lasers' six hits came off the bat of Brianna Gendreau, as she collected a double and two singles. The other hits came from Emily Mestas, Eryn Sheeley, and Ally Kirck. Sheeley had two RBI while Gendreau had one. Sheeley started on the mound for the Lasers, pitching a complete game, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. Normally very much in command of her pitches, Sheeley walked eight batters, the same amount she had walked in her previous five starts combined. She also struck out six, bringing her career total to 263, just 23 away from breaking the school record. Her record on the season is now 7-3.

Game Two

In a reversal of roles to game one, the Sharks got out to the early in this game, scoring three in the first inning. The Lasers responded with a run in the second, as Brianna Gendreau led the inning off with a triple, and came home on a ground out. But the Sharks pushed their lead back up to three with a run in the third. The Lasers inched back into the game when Eryn Sheeley hit her secondhome run of the season, a two run variety, making it 4-3. After the Sharks answered with two runs of their own, the Lasers once again closed the gap in the sixth on a two RBI Mackenzie Still double. With Still, the tying run, in scoring position, the Lasers were unable to put the ball in play, still trailing by one after the sixth. Despitea two out single in the seventh that gave the Lasers hope, they were unable to push a final run across, falling 6-5.

The Lasers collected seven hits in the game, with Eryn Sheeley and Mackenzie Still each grabbing two. They each drove in all of the Lasers runs with Still knocking in three and Sheeley two. Abigail Fortin was in the circle for the Lasers and pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs. She struck out one and walked three.
