SB: Lasers Sweep GNAC Opener

Newton, MA - The Lasell Lasers Softball team won their fifth and sixth games in a row on Wednesday, and have now won eight out of nine games overall after defeating Regis 5-4 and 4-3. The Lasers are now 11-5 overall, and 2-0 in conference play, while the Pride are 4-8 and 0-2.

Game One

Regis got out to the early lead scoring two runs on a home run in the first inning. Lasell would get one back in the second on an error. The big inning came in the third, as Brianna Gendreau started a rally with a single, and then scored on a Mackenzie Still triple. Up next was Katie Hopkins, and she homered to give the Lasers the lead. After a walk, Ally Kirck knocked in another run with an RBI triple to make it 5-2. The Pride would make things interesting after scoring two in the sixth, and getting the tying run to third, but Eryn Sheeley would get out of the jam with a strikeout. The Pride then got the tying run in scoring position in the seventh, but Sheeley once again was able to get out of it, and get the win for the Lasers.

The Lasers had seven hits, and Katie Hopkins was the only member of the team to record multiple. The story of the game was the pitching by Eryn Sheeley, as she moved to 7-2 on the season, pitching a complete game while allowing seven hits and four earned runs. She struck out 12 batters, tying her career high, and coming just one short of the school record.

Game Two

In another tight game, the Pride once again struck first scoring a run in the first inning. But the Lasers responded in the third with two runs, the first on an Emily Mestas RBI single, who then scored on a ground out. The Lasers added on to their lead in the fourth with two more runs, both on another Mestas single. Just like they did in the first game, the Pride made things interesting, scoring twice in the fifth to make it 4-3. They got the tying run in scoring position, but were unable to tie things up, as the Lasers held on for the 4-3 win.

Emily Mestas and Eryn Sheeley each had two of the Lasers' eight hits, with Mestas knocking in three of the Lasers' four runs, and scoring the other. Abigail Fortin picked up her fourth win of the season, going seven innings, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs. She struck out five.

Up next - The Lasers will travel to Dean College on Saturday to play a doubleheader at 12pm.
