SB: Lasell drops twin bill at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – Lasell College dropped a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Gordon College, falling 7-4 in the opener and dropping a 9-1 game in five innings in the nightcap.

Gordon set its program record with its 17th win of the season, improving to 17-17 overall, while Lasell slides to 6-26.

Lasell returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Wednesday, April 24, with a make-up doubleheader at Simmons University, beginning at 5 p.m. The Fighting Scots are back on the diamond on Saturday, April 27 as they host Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Western New England University in a pivotal matchup with postseason implications at stake.

Game 1 – Gordon 7, Lasell 4

After Gordon put up one run in the first inning, Lasell took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Senior Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led off with a single and sophomores Nicolette Genkos (Worcester, Mass.) and Bethany Hector (Jaffrey, N.H.) were hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases. Junior Essie Plouffe (North Scituate, R.I.) singled to score Spellman, and sophomore Alexis Truesdale (Wakefield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to score Genkos.

The Fighting Scots got one back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Lauren Bieren, but scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull out the win. The big blow was a grand slam by Bieren. Lasell scored once in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by freshman Kelsey Scannevin (Harpwell, Maine) but Gordon held on for the win.

Spellman finished 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for Lasell.

Game 2 – Gordon 9, Lasell 1 (5 innings)

The Lasers jumped on top with a run in the top of the second. Junior Arianna Genovese (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led off with a double and freshman Lisa Pare (Ellington, Conn.) and Truesdale delivered back-to-back singles up the middle to score Genovese.

It was all Gordon the rest of the way as the Fighting Scots clubbed four home runs. Senior Megan Jenkerson became Gordon's all-time career home run leader, hitting her 18th, and Rose Shannon hit her first career home run.

Spellman finished 1-for-2 with a walk, reaching base in 5-of-6 plate appearances on the day.
